Following up some of my morning thoughts: "Labour’s basic electoral problem comes from the fact that left-leaning voters are indeed choosing to vote against rather than for parties. The problem is that progressives aren’t just voting against Reform. They are now actively voting against Labour."
I keep thinking of @dylandifford.bsky.social's point that everything wrong with the McSweeney-Starmer governing strategy was obvious to anyone who had done the most basic and broad of first year political science.
I don't know what the opposite of nominative determinism is. But Matt Goodwin does.
📰A plethora of great coverage for our 2026 Crime Report.
👮Retail crime may have come down but it has not gone away.
🤝The industry will continue to work with Government and police to ensure maximum attention is given to an issue which affects every retailer on a daily basis.
(short version, theft is obviously bad, but the rise in incidents may be higher reporting rather than more criminality)
According to the latest figures there was a 15 per cent rise in shop thefts in Scotland last year; with over 50,000 incidents. The SRC's response is here: brc.org.uk/news-and-eve...
Tim Allan, Keir Starmer’s director of communications, has just quit his Downing Street role:
“I have decided to stand down to allow a new No 10 team to be built. I wish the PM and his team every success."
It's a finely balanced decision. On the one hand, you have the architect of a strategy that is not working, who could not do this job in opposition *the first time*, and buy the PM breathing space. On the other, moving it would involve admitting that some of the PM's old legal buddies were right.
Thanks to Maurice Golden MSP for tabling a motion in the Scottish Parliament commending our Nature Positive Plan. 📜
The plan aims to help retailers accelerate nature-positive action and halt and reverse biodiversity loss across their value chains. 🦋

I saw the Record this morning and wanted to post about how it was both morally appalling and strategically clownlike for SLAB to take their trans-exclusionary position. But then @dhothersall.bsky.social had already done it much better than I could have:
The BPC is much less than people believe - it's sort of been a victim of its own success. It is a transparency pact - we all agree to follow transparency rules. It is not a quality mark in any way. Pollsters can be members of the BPC and be rubbish, so long as they are transparently rubbish.

something I observe, you who cares about high streets? Migrants. when greggs, poundland, the banks and starbucks closed, we got Greek bakeries, Albanian cafes, Turkish wholesalers and a good pizzeria. If it wasn't for the Polski Sklep a lot of london high streets would have turned to shit ages ago

Nigel Farage is currently unveiling Robert Jenrick as a defector at his 430 press conference.
I mean, my wife’s horse has a field, stable, and receives everything he could possibly want or need in return for 20 mins light exercise he enjoys. This doesn’t sound that bad tbh
A Budget which isn't terrible but is a bit disappointing, the SRC's response to today's Budget here: brc.org.uk/news-and-eve...
It's a great article, and I agree. But you must have had a bet on how many times you could write 'Nazi Dildo Dungeon' in your copy?
Nice to kick off Scottish Budget week with a early interview with Radio Scotland on what retailers are looking for in tomorrow's Scottish Budget (rates discount, funding retail crime taskforce and supporting consumers) (06:25) : www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
I call on my party and my government to remove themselves entirely from X and communicate with the public where they actually participate online and can be protected from such illegality.
Five leading Business Improvement Districts have added their voices to that of the SRC in calling on Scottish Government to introduce a permanent business rate discount for all retail, hospitality, and leisure premises.

I once had to go to minor injuries after slicing my finger open, spraying blood across the kitchen (which needed repainting), because I caught it on some cardboard in the paper bin.
It's still scarred a decade later.
General PSA: Don't be an asshole to retail staff in the run-up to Christmas. Or ever, really.
Huge new poll puts Plaid ahead of Reform with Labour and the Conservatives on just 10% each. willhaywardwales.substack.com/p/bombshell-...
