We get to choose:
The Roberts Court and its approach to executive power, or the American science superpower.
We can't have both.
Octavia E. Butler said, “These novels are not prophetic. These novels are cautionary tales… The problems that I write about are problems that we can do something about. That's why I write about them.”
And “I hope they're not prophecy because I don't want to live in that world.”
The most impt change at #NIH and to US science this year is bigger than grant cancellations— it’s how the agency is governed.
For 75 years NIH has been largely independent of presidential control. That’s changed this year. New piece from me and @nataliebaviles.bsky.social in @nature.com

I want you to know that if you use Gen AI tools I hold you personally responsible for the environmental destruction, the harm and the idiocy creep that they are inflicting
When the US govt terminated the National Nature Asst, @phillevin.bsky.social + the author team were determined not to let that stop them.
They re-organized, set up an advisory committee, found funding…and now the brand new Nature Record is open for public comment. 👏🌳👏🌲
Check it out (link below)!
Not only has the NIH terminated hundreds of grants, they’re also giving out far fewer grants than appropriate for their budget. Some researchers will have to close their labs or severely cut back their research. This is a self-inflicted wound.
New paper out! We sat down and compiled all viral work in marine sediments. The water column has been getting a second look for viral interactions, its time for sediment to have the same!

THE DEATH OF US SCIENCE ☠️
The weather may not be favorable, but a total lunar eclipse will occur on the morning of March 3rd. Please refer to the table below, which is set for southwest Michigan, or download our March Night Sky star map to read more: www.kasonline.org/files/0326ma....
Geosciences - which includes ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences (and everything else associated with the Earth system). 😱
Scientific research in the US is being slowly and painfully suffocated.
Rising ocean temps blamed for massive die-off of marine life. "Researchers examined the year-to-year change of 33,000 [fish] populations in the northern hemisphere.... They found the drop in biomass from chronic heating to be as high as 19.8% in a single year." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Hard not to worry that this isn't another attempt by OMB's Russell Vought to override Congress's power of the purse.

This is such a well done piece that reports out, with hard data and interviews, something profound about what's gone wrong in this country.

“‘I am begging my fellow politicians, my fellow Americans to realize that right now in this country we are not fighting over policy or political party,’ Pritzker said. ‘We are fighting over whether we are going to be a civilization rooted in empathy and kindness—or one rooted in cruelty and rage.’”

Trump's attacks on science have impacted all areas of research
I wanted to find out what they could mean for Earth's poles – and was saddened to hear scientists I've known for years detail field trips being abruptly cancelled and that many plan to leave the US

Left panel labeled “In UK” shows a uniformed police officer escorting Prince Andrew in handcuffs, captioned “Justice.” Right panel labeled “In U.S.” shows an armed ICE agent dragging a crying child, captioned “Just ICE,” contrasting accountability with state violence.
🆕 study: Global warming must stay below 2°C and return to 1.5°C as quickly as possible to reduce tipping point risks. In the long term, temperatures must cool to 1°C above pre-industrial levels, researchers from @exeter.ac.uk, @cicero.oslo.no and PIK find.
