So interesting - seems like it was the other half of panic and then deciding it was the same thing as overanxious disorder was pretty formative in making it what it is today?

I'll have to read about it some more! I'm particularly curious about the changes between -III and -III-R.

Choose your DSM-III GAD fish:
1. Discomfort in pit of the stomach, anticipating misfortune to others, insomnia
3. Restless, high resting pulse rate, impatient
4. Trembling, racing heart, fear
5. Jittery, diarrhea, feeling on edge
6. Furrowed brow(?), ruminating, difficulty concentrating

The DSM-III diagnostic criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which read:
A. Generalized, persistent anxiety is manifested by symptoms from three
of the following four categories;
(1) motor tension: shakiness, jitteriness, jumpiness, trembling, tension,
muscle aches, fatigabjlity, inability to relax, eyelid twitch, furrowed
brow, strained face, fidgeting, restlessness, easy startle
(2) autonomic hyperactivity: sweating, heart pounding or racing,
cold, clammy hands, dry mouth, dizziness, light-headedness, paresthesias
(tingling in hands or feet), upset stomach, hot or cold spells,
frequent urination, diarrhea, discomfort in the pit of the stomach,
lump in the throat, flushing, pallor, high resting pulse and respiration
rate
(3) apprehensive expectation: anxiety, worry, fear, rumination, and
anticipation of misfortune to self or others
(4) vigilance and scanning: hyperattentiveness resulting in distractibility,
difficulty in concentrating, insomnia, feeling "on edge/' irritability,
impatience
B. The anxious mood has been continuous for at least one month.
C .Not due to another mental disorder, such as a Depressive Disorder or
Schizophrenia.
D. At least 18 years of age.
