#oats #plantbreeding #smallgrains 3 pm pollen shower!
Weβ try to put together an SOP for crossing soon, but I do have a post in instagram βoatbreedingβ with videos of each step. Key points: good emasculation, clipping male panicle, position male above female panicle, tap them three times a day for 6 to 7 days.
With success defined as an emasculated panicle with 4 or more grains in it.
#oat crossing season is almost over at U of I. Reflection. This year we emasculated and pair male plants together (donor pollen panicles) with females (emasculated panicles) for seven days and tapped them trice a day with 100% crossing success! This has been our best crossing season ever!
#oat brace roots? These F1 oat plants enjoyed cool temperatures and plenty of fertilizer, not only grew super tall but display what seems brace roots!
In addition, high-density planting in low-nutrient media generated #oat plants with one single seed 85% of the time! Very close to #SSD with less labor and space, just like Cisar et al. 1982. Detailed protocol in doi.org/10.1186/s13007β¦. Thanks Milcah Kigoni and Megan Choi!
So excited to see our contribution to rapid generation advancement in #oat. We combined #SpeedBreeding with high-density planting in low-nutrient media and accelerated flowering by 20-25 days earlier than control conditions (doi.org/10.1186/s13007β¦) #PlantBreeding
#oat is by far the hardest small grain crop I had to cross with (never worked on Teff). Swing this many F1 makes me sooooooo happy. Our new cycle has begun #PlantBreeding
Fall 23 #oat / #pea #forage plots looking great at #UIUC. Recent rains helped tons. Exited to see their progress. Keep an eye on them βCoyooβ #PlantBreeding #Intercropping
