Transit-oriented ski adventure: 2 trains, 2 busses, and 1 trolley!
A large (dirty) snow pile with a bunch of flex posts in it.
Overall, all cities have made a lot of progress on snow clearing!
Especially in Somerville and Cambridge though, the flex posts and precast concrete did not fare as well... let's make sure to get those re-installed asap in the Spring, and better training in the future so they don't get ripped up.
An uncleared bike lane
A well-cleared bike lane with a concrete curb across it.
@boston.gov: Needs Improvement
Boston did a lot better in this last storm, but there are still some protected lanes that are unplowed (like Beacon St). Also, there was a concrete curb left across the bike lane on Mass Ave! The other lanes I rode on (and off-street paths) were plowed.

A cleared bike lane, but with a giant snow pile in it.
@cityofsomerville.bsky.social: Partially Meets Expectations
Somerville does an okay job of keeping lanes clear, though it can take a few days. They also will occasionally leave a large pile of snow in the middle of the lane or not clear down to the pavement. Non-protected lanes are full of snow.

@cambridgemass.bsky.social: Exceeds Expectations
In the past two storms, I've consistently found that Cambridge clears bike lanes quickly (even during the storm), and well (down to pavement). They also clear to the curb for non-protected lanes. Bonus points for keeping flex posts intact!

Wow, it snowed a lot this winter! So, how are the bike lanes? Let's grade the Boston-area cities on their snow removal, a π§΅

the same bike lane, but there is now a path shoveled through the pile of snow.
A 90% cleared bike lane is a good start but not good enough! @cityofsomerville.bsky.social clearing was better than last storm, but please don't leave mounds of snow in the middle of bike lanes. I don't like spending an hour shoveling so that people can pass.

@burhanazeem.bsky.social gets stuff done. Check out his campaign and get involved!
down!
A bike lane that has been plowed such that there is a snow bank separating the bike lane and the travel lane.
You've heard of #sneckdowns, but about snecklanes! The first 30ft of this bike lane is usually unprotected and often blocked by illegally parked cars. The bike lane plow gave it protection! Maybe we should keep it like that. @somervilleinfr1.bsky.social @cityofsomerville.bsky.social
Itβs been on my list to go!

Thank you to @mbta.com navigating challenging conditions today (specially the steep grade of the Elmer Bumpus bridge).

Rub a dub dub, three men in a thrub
Please make sure bike lanes get well plowed during and after the storm! It makes it very dangerous to travel when they are not.
BOSTON!!! Time to SHOW UP! We rise in defiance of the oppressive federal regime and we stand FOR our communities and our country. Join us on March 28th as we proclaim AMERICA HAS NO KINGS!!!
Thanks for clearing these! Itβs been tough the past few weeks.
valentine's day isn't just for couples, it's also a day to celebrate love. for instance, i would love it if housing prices came down.

In high school, I designed a mid-century modern home and created a scale model of the first subway station in Boston.
So yeah, I've always been like this.
One more compelling reason to invest in passenger rail.
Hey Boston! Clear your bike lanes! Look across the river, Cambridge and Somerville have managed to do it. @mayorwu.boston.gov @streets.boston.gov
@amtrak.com Downeaster badly needs higher frequency. My train was cancelled today and the next one is not for 2 hours, which is actually one of the smaller gaps throughout the day.
A cleared bike lane.
Update: more were cleared today (though needs a final pass)! Great to see the progress.
My toes were icicles by the end but a warm drink and pastry at a coffee shop after brought me back to life!
@boston.gov when are the bike lanes getting cleared? A few are cleared (thank you!), but most are currently impassible.
@streets.boston.gov @mayorwu.boston.gov
@cityofsomerville.bsky.social thanks for clearing some of the bike lanes. BUT, there are still quite a few that are yet to be cleared! Please finishing clearing lanes so we can travel safely.

A street and bike lane in Cambridge, Massachusetts, cleared of snow
Thank you to the stellar @cambridgemass.bsky.social DPW for keeping everyone moving! Streets and bike lanes are pretty clear in Cambridge, with lingering snow piles at corners to be cleared in time. Remember to go slow, be forgiving, and look out for another!
