At any rate, we can't blame the non-rev sports, because even if the football program turns a profit, Title IX requires equivalent opportunities for women to offset the 85 (you read that right) athletics scholarships and UNLIMITED number of coaches that the football team commands, with NCAA blessing.
Yes, non-rev sports lose money by definition but they're not the problem. The majority of athletics spending at D1s goes to football and men's basketball: coach salaries and athletics scholarships. A handful of schools can turn a profit on those programs but they are the exceptions.
