This year’s theme, “Applied Linguistics and the Global South: English and other problems”, invites us to challenge dominant narratives and reimagine how language, identity, and colonial histories intersect.
I’ll share how shared experiences —being away from home, multilingualism, and racialised positioning— helped build trust-based, reciprocal research relationships and created space for open, honest conversations around race, identity, and language.
In this talk, I reflect on what it means to do decolonial sociolinguistic research as a woman from the Global South, working with First Nations girls in an Australian boarding school.
This is the title of the paper I’ll be presenting as part of the 2025 Applied Linguistics PhD Residential hosted by the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster.

A few weeks ago, I joined RTRFM to talk about teen language. People often complain that teenagers 'are destroying language' but often ignore how important language is for youth to carve out their identities, especially in school, where they compete with peers for power, popularity and resources.
