I agree, but try substituting a precious food item for the word “cake.” Last year I was reaching the bottom of a jug of one-of-kind handmade maple syrup, sad to see it go, and said, “I guess you can’t have your syrup and eat it too”. It was the first time the idiom resonated for me.
