And sometimes the demand for transparency and accountability comes in the form of harpies hurling memoranda at your parliament meeting, followed by feeding corrupt officials to said harpies Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
It's inspired by the notion of government transparency in a social justice framework, and how the demand and adherence to transparency leads to the enshrining of rights, an emphasis on transparency which leads to interrogation of motivation, asking "why" of specific govt choices.
"Harpy Aviary" is set in a sandbox I've been playing with for a while where I imagined a kingdom where the people enshrine specific rights from bottom-up, even if there is a sovereign who runs the state and govt bodies with expected material outcomes.

Yeah, if you have TALES OF THE PERILOUS REALM! I read "Leaf, by Niggle" when I was 15 and it has stuck with me in ways the long-form works don't.
HOBBIT and LOTR are emininently readable though. I read LOTR before HOBBIT when I was 12!

I adored this novel from the get-go even though I don't usually like protagonists in this age group. But it's the perfect encapsulation of speculative fiction as what happens when ordinary people find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Plus the ending sticks the landing SO satisfyingly!
IF WISHES WERE RETAIL by @aahabershaw.bsky.social is a delightful novel about mall retail, customer service, fear of the unknown, and wishes, where our intrepid heroine has to guide her genie boss through modern life with hilarious and poignant realisations:
