Would not put it past him to be a fan of red socks and quirky spelling
Heh the teen describes our current car as βthe average of all carsβ. It is *impossible* to find in a lot. I miss the eggplant car whose color I hated.
A sealed US mail box (full of snake penises) sitting on a desk in a lab. A flammable solvent cabinet is visible in the background.
Doesnβt everyone start their day by saying βhooray, my snake penises have arrived!β?

A screenshot of a single grayscale CT slice of a tomato with a few scattered pixels highlighted in red. A lower-density region around the stem looks a lot like a realistic eye, and there are two other air spaces around seeds in the approximate location of two eyebrows.
Pareidolia fun at work: The researcher and I saw two different faces in this slice of tomato. Either itβs a cyclops with two eyebrows, or it has a funny shaped nose.

Have CT scanned anesthetized snakes and can confirm that putting them under (with injectable anesthetic) was way more of a rigamarole than I was expecting. Their heart was higher up than I was expectingβtheir whole bottom 85% is just a stretched out intestine.
We all deserve the results of projects that were gearing up or in full swing, which youβd paid for. When projects like this get cancelled, you lose out on way more than that last year of money, and you also canβt start it up again quickly. We all lose.
The Cornell Chronicle has been absolutely killing it lately sharing stories of research funding that has been rescinded without notice. Pediatric heart pumps, tick borne disease tests, military nutrition, and cybersecurity projects. What is next?

Day to day at work, Iβm busy with scans and emails and worrying about funding and all the small practical bits that come with helping people learn more about the world. I do forget that Iβm breathing rarefied air, how lucky I am to be a working class kid, breathing it.
Iβm remembering it today.

Iβm sitting outside, eating my lunch and listening to American Prometheus, which is chock full of little anecdotes about people whose names are attached to units or equations Iβve used. To wit, a very peripheral name got mentioned and Iβm literally facing a building with that name on it.
ExactlyβI phrased that poorly but we have gotten caught by that a couple of times.

This has always been my explanation of why Iβm not a professor. If I want 3 full time jobs, yβall better pay me for three full time jobs.
A normal mouse brain sits next to a chemically cleared mouse brain.
Several studies in our lab involve chemically cleared brains. Finally took the time to have a photo shoot, so I can show in presentations. The cleared brain shines brightly β¨ under natural light.
Please, dogs ass.
If I donβt close all my tabs at the end of the day I have failed.

All 4 of my NIH research grants are terminated. These were grants on MDR-TB treatment & strategies for supporting adolescents living w/ HIV. This is a massive waste of resources. I am heartbroken for my Harvard team, my partners in Peru, the next generation of scientists & our country. Shame.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.
It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.
What the HELL?

A single stalk of asparagus.
Several years ago, I planted asparagus, to uninspiring results. Gave up on the vegetable garden. Yesterday, this. You never know what effort will someday bear fruit.
