BREAKING: powerful iPhone hacking tools used by Chinese criminals originated from US defense giant L3 Harris.

Their zero-click exploits went to Russian spies too.

Unbelievable harm to our collective security.

Purely from an IP law perspective, trying to "opt out" something that is at minimum a right of publicity issue and which has potential reputational issues for the involved experts is a bold move.

A very bold move.

A really really bold move.

If the rumours are true and the kids and social media consultation opens today, here are two things I think should be banned from
social media:

1) AI bots
2) recommendations algorithms that optimise for time on site

Firm regulation of both of these things is possible and auditable

@andrewsimms.bsky.social author of Badvertising argues for a ban on petrol advertising and equivalents. 60% of new cars now SUVs, c/w 10% a decade ago- more polluting and more dangerous mode of transport at exactly the time we needed to shift the other way. Literally advertising our own destruction.

This New Hotel Reservation Scam Is Fooling People Who Use Sites Like Booking.com If you've booked a hotel through a platform like Booking.com or Expedia, beware any communication that directs you to confirm your payment details to hold your reservation.

A scammer just tried exactly this on me via WhatsApp. Glad I saw a post here recently outlining the scam - it would be very easy to fall for. The β€œhotel” account had an unconvincing name, but they had my name, number & reservation dates. lifehacker.com/money/hotel-...

As a rule I don’t reply to emails that ask me to supervise a topic totally unrelated to what I research and/or contain β€œ[insert proposed supervisor’s area of research here]”. But unlike prior years, they now send generic follow up emails too

I am starting to wonder if some applicants have access to a mass emailing tool with a dataset of scraped UK academics emails. Because I’ve also been receiving a lot of generic emails for PhD supervision followed by what appears to be automated follow up emails

As everyone knows, the only thing more viscerally exciting than a 3rd sector consultation response is a consultation response to a regulator's annual plan of work. But FIPR's response to Ofcom's recent consultation is worth a read - we cover some of the biggest policy issues facing the UK today.

Part 2 of the Independent Review of the Criminal Courts has been published. There's a lot to take in but two positives in the recommendations to start with
i) MOJ collecting data on unrepresented defendants
ii) increasing lower and upper end of legal aid threshold:
