Three hours of transcribing this evening and this is what I see when I close my eyes now

‘You can get to fuck’ is probably not what they mean, right?

Ok that’s two votes, then

Yes! Not like I’m obsessed but they could use Loligo forbesii (the long-veined squid), it occurs around Britain and is named for my favourite C19 naturalist #justsaying

Can they also put a squid on the quid, please? Come on BoE, this is an open goal and low-hanging fruit and other terrible metaphors for an easy win

Me: I’ve drafted this article; it’s for print so we’re on a strict word count and it can’t go above 300 words, so if you want to add anything we’ll have to cut something.

Colleague: <adds 150 words, instructs that there’s to be no cutting of anything>

Isn’t the present also the default tense in English? Which would make it easier for an ESL speaker too

Testing shows Myfanwy the mammoth roamed Anglesey 15,000 years ago Myfanwy is one of the oldest mammoths to have re-populated Britain towards the end of the last Ice Age.

Holyhead’s own mammoth, Myfanwy, is giving up their* secrets!

*one secret not yet given up is their sex

Jay McInerney uses it really well in Bright Lights, Big City

This time of year is always a challenge, thanks to my crippling hot cross bun addiction. On reflection, maybe I should’ve given them up for Lent

That could be it! It might not be any deeper than that, after all

I wonder if it’s because there seems to be an increase in readers needing to identify with/self-insert into the main character (as happens a lot with YA and fanfic) and present tense helps that, as it’s as if the action is happening right now.

Caveat: I am not that clever, though.

Today is International Women's Day and we're celebrating Mary Buckland! Buckland was a naturalist and illustrator who's work is being celebrated in our current special exhibition, Breaking Ground.

This photo is one of our most recent acquisitions and was donated by a descendant of the Bucklands.

I LOVE this film. Cleo Ridgely is so sweet in it. She should’ve been bigger! The lighting is great too, quite surreal in places.

Btw I’m absolutely appalled that this got more engagement than any of my genuinely educational posts about long-dead naturalists. Shame on us all 🤣

I know it’s totally shallow of me and I should be objectively describing the events that led to this image, but come on, look at him

Robert Cornelius. Black and white, scratched daguerreotype of young white man with dark clothes and messy dark hair, arms folded, looking towards the camera with an expression that says ‘I have no idea if this is going to work’.

Unforgivably, I missed the 1 March birthday of American photography pioneer Robert Cornelius. Which, tbh, is really just an excuse to post his 1839 self-portrait, widely viewed as the first selfie. And also rather hot.

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for
