“Us when you add alt text.” Viola Davis is on stage at the SAG Awards, looking overwhelmingly happy. She’s looking up with her mouth wide open and arms outstretched. She is giving pure joy. She also looks really glam in an off-the-shoulder, shimmering teal dress. The bodice is fitted, emphasising a sculpted silhouette. The fabric is finely pleated, creating a radiant, almost rippled effect. It has long, flowing drapes of the same teal material hanging from the arms. She’s wearing a white, choker-style necklace made of pearls or beadwork. At the centre of the necklace hangs a large green, teardrop which catches the light.

KOS Site of the month – March
Northward Hill RSPB - March is a perfect time to visit this North Kent gem! The UK’s largest heronry is bursting into life, with Grey Herons and Little Egrets busy nesting. Keep an eye on the marshes for Marsh Harriers and wintering wildfowl!

Yorkshire Dales sheep and cattle swap boosts biodiversity - studies Natural England began switching to cattle grazing at its Ingleborough site in the Dales in 2004.

After replacing sheep with free-roaming cattle, 5x as many butterflies were recorded, and 2x as many species, due to the increased floral diversity.

Interesting stuff. But unless stocking densities are *extremely* low, cattle are an ecological disaster too.

Wow, this is an important paper. We had some evidence early on from @ukbms.bsky.social sites but rarely had good data in grazing regimes. But @tombrereton.bsky.social always said that extensive cattle was the best for butterflies and this add yet more evidence

Factoid sharing time.

Pic is of the Medway viaducts, over the Medway Gap. First two carry the M2, nearest carries #train line for HS1.

TIL UK train speed record was set on this stretch of line.
208 mph (334.7 km/h), 30/07/03.

How the heck can you see the birds on the river at that speed? 😉

Thank you Steve for such a wonderful endorsement of ‘Urban Plants’, especially your suggestion that non-botanists would enjoy reading it too. There’s so much to discover on every wall & pavement and I hope this book brings it all to life. And yes, I love disappearing down a good rabbit hole!

When people lose their sight, it’s vital that they get support to learn new ways of getting around and doing everyday tasks.

However, thousands of people in England are people waiting over a year for this support.

I absolutely refuse to believe that the pheasant who regularly visits my mum and dad’s garden is real and has not in fact been crocheted.
