Mark: ever thought of expanding CostPlus to provide health insurance? There are good models out there, like SCAN health and others.

Private/Commercial insurance companies now cover a majority of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries is most markets. It’s the most significant shift in health care. Major stressor.

@mcuban.bsky.social: any interest in expanding your success with Cost Plus Drugs into Cost Plus Medigap Insurance? The market is ripe for disruption.

The problem with that plan is that Medicare Advantage and MediGap costs are soaring too.

3 patients this week have shared that they are giving up health insurance in January due to skyrocketing premiums. One 62 yo (with no serious illnesses) said that the cheapest she could find was $1800/month. Her plan: roll the dice without insurance until she's Medicare eligible.

Same in our home state of Michigan. 25% of Michigan residents are enrolled in Medicare; in rural communities it's as high as 40 - 45%. Every $1 of Medicaid spending in rural communities generates $3 - $4 of economic activity from keeping people at work, and providing good paying health care jobs.

This point needs to be made far and wide, and outside the scientific media.

NIH cuts = financial ruin not just for Universities, but for everyone.

Michigan Medicine is opening the new Ypsilanti Health Center in downtown Ypsilanti on June 2nd, and the hall is packed with people excited for today's ribbon cutting.

This project enhances health care access, improves services for mental health care, and brings more jobs and activity to downtown.

Kudos to our UM Family Medicine team, lead by Katy Gold and Greg Shumer, for ongoing evaluation of our primary care transformation. Nuanced insights to help us understand how our patients want to receive care from our physician-led teams. @umichmedicalschool.bsky.social @um-ihpi.bsky.social

Medicaid covers 168,000 seniors in Michigan.

Michigan nursing homes receive >$3 billion in Medicaid funding.

Cuts to Medicaid? Wrong for Michigan seniors. #nomedicaidcuts #momsky

This is a true breakthrough, particularly for the thousands of people who do not currently receive traditional cervical cancer screening (i.e. 'pap smear') due to mobility limitations, lack of transportation, prior medical and/or sexual trauma, geographic remoteness, or preference.

NIH guts its first and largest study centered on women The Women’s Health Initiative has produced numerous influential findings

NIH guts its first and largest study centered on women | Science

We should all mourn the loss of our best source of health data for more than half of Americans.

Question: the WHI budget is under $10M/year. Opportunity for philanthropy to step in, even in the short run? Donors out there?

#PrimaryCare patients prefer their PCP for routine & chronic care, willing to wait weeksβ€”except for urgent issues (only 7.2% would wait) As health systems prioritize speed over continuity, this study suggests patient preferences favor trust over convenience #FMsky

Insightful work by our team at University of Michigan Family Medicine, quantifying the value of trust over transaction. Relationships matter, and we intend to demonstrate it in as many ways as we can.

Study after study shows we're behind in growing #PrimaryCare. It's honestly really simple: pay people specifically to become PCPs and then pay practicing PCPs better.

This original research study highlights patients who saw their own family physician for after-hours care were 10% less likely to visit the ER within a week, suggesting that continuity of care may improve outcomes, reduce ER visits & lower health care costs.
