This is why we must fight for everyone. Whether they’ve been incarcerated or have had contact with the criminal legal system or are merely undocumented. When you accept that some people are deserving of detention and deportation the scope of who is eligible is always under threat of expanding.

ICE Is Rapidly Expanding Its Already Vast Surveillance Apparatus ICE is investing massive sums in facial recognition, data surveillance, e-carceration and other repressive technologies.

Not only conducting mass raids, ICE has posted notices for contractors to provide surveillance tech to enlarge, transform, and modernize capabilities to track, monitor & surveil noncitizens.

Migrants are at nexus of surveillance tech & expansion of racial state power.

Spectre: A Marxist Journal Spectre is a new Marxist journal that understands anti-oppression struggles as constitutive of class struggle. Pro-Black, pro-queer, and resolutely internationalist.

Make 2025 the year you end your dependence on corporate breaking news outlets, and return to substantive long form and nonprofit journalism. Here are some outlets I'm reading (and subscribing to) this year:

1. CalMatters. A dedicated nonprofit newsroom covering California in depth. calmatters.org

If you want to know what the death penalty actually looks like, not in the abstract, but as it plays out in courtrooms in America, check out what evidence Oklahoma prosecutors used to send Brenda Andrews to death row. This is from a case SCOTUS today asked lower courts to take another look at.

How you can help the incarcerated firefighters battling L.A. wildfires The Los Angeles-based Anti-Recidivism Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to ending mass incarceration, started a fundraiser on Friday to support the fire crews of California’s prisons.

I had a lot of people asking me so I wrote an explainer: Here's how you can help the incarcerated firefighter battling the blazes in Southern California this week:

One thing to hold fast to is that so much of the work we do to fight fascism is also work that builds a better world. Building community, building power at work, forming bonds and practices of solidarity all lead us towards a better society, particularly if we approach it with that orientation.

My thought on the mass deportations is that I think a lot of people are, in my view, wrongly looking for something like a military coup, which would look like deputizing the military to go house to house and sweep up immigrants or people who might be immigrants. But I think that it’s going to look a lot more like policing, like policing people are used to, which is why I’m concerned. Because I worry that when it’s not immediately obvious to everybody, that they will say, β€œOh, well, whatever. He can’t really do it.” And there’s been a lot of press about, it’s too expensive to do mass deportations. There’s no place to hold people, etc. And I’m like, look, you have states already doing it, and the costs have evidently not been a barrier. Not saying it doesn’t cost money, but it really hasn’t been a barrier.

If anyone wants to go deeper, I reported on where these jail/prison commissions go and how they’re used β€” including a 50 state policy analysis. I think this is a really under appreciated aspect of the scheme and one that companies and DOCs are VERY touchy about www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/shad...
