Yeah any amount of fascism is too much fascism. I'm thinking more in terms of scale. Star Wars is: what if we took a regular human concept, war, and made it galaxy-scale. Massive planet-sized battles, factions the size of star systems! It feels like the scale of a Galactic Empire should match.
(Plus it just makes the Empire feel like a blip on the galactic radar instead of this massive imposing unstoppable force. The Roman Empire lasted for 1500 years and they didn't have a single Star Destroyer!)
Yeah they made it work (kinda, if you squint) post hoc, but that just means they had to put a lot of work to organize around a flawed premise.

This would honestly make more sense of some of the lines in A New Hope, where the Force is treated as old superstitious hokum instead of the dominant prevailing religious ideology as of 20 years ago. One of the Moffs mocks it right to Vader's face!
Anakin Skywalker could have been a promising pupil that Obi-Wan took in, but who ultimately fell to the dark side and betrayed their fledgling little cult and wiped out whatever remnants remained.
I think Lucas must have felt boxed in by Obi-Wan pining for the days before the Empire, but he didn't really have to be. The Jedi could have been a cult of mystics who still practice in secret. He could have heard about the Republic word-of-mouth. The Empire could have lasted for generations.
Slowly talking myself into the notion that the original sin of the Star Wars prequel trilogy was deciding that the Republic had to be something within Obi-Wan's living memory and therefore the Empire could only be around 20 years old.
