Conservation Enters a New Era - bioGraphic One year after the Trump administration slashed biodiversity protections at home and abroad, people and organizations are figuring out where to go from here.

For a century, the United States dominated & influenced conservation around the world--for better and for worse. That era is over.

@biographic.bsky.social has a special issue on the next era of conservation--what it looks like, who's funding it, & what it means for people, species, & ecosystems 🌱

Kids lit peeps (and anyone else!) β€” what are some of your favourite picture books for children that do a good job of blending science with fictionalized characters? Or, what are some that send you? (Whales spouting plumes of water is a personal pet peeve.) πŸ“šπŸ‘πŸΌ

How are California’s birds faring amid ever more frequent wildfires? In the forests of the Sierra Nevada, the black-backed woodpecker is without parallel. The bird appears almost born of fire, thriving on the flames that flicker through California’s coniferous forests…

Long-term research in California shows many bird populations rise after moderate wildfires and stay abundant for decades.

But megafires are becoming more common, harming species reliant on old-growth forests. Smoke exposure also poses serious health risks for birds.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from OkjΓΆkull to Ok (jΓΆkull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Calls for grizzly hunts to return to Western Canada oversimplify a complex ecological issue Hunting advocacy organizations and politicians are inciting a moral panic about grizzly bears, oversimplifying an inherently complex ecological problem.

Bringing some reality to the discussion in the aftermath of the grizzly attacks in BC. It's infuriating how the BC Wildlife Federation jumped on it as a reason to open the grizzly bear hunt and some media gave them a megaphone even before there were any details. theconversation.com/calls-for-gr...
