That’s awful. My mom has worked in gerontology her whole life and is now elderly herself, and she has an entire community of senior volunteers who have ample opportunities to continue to share their time. I really wish that was something more engrained in our society.

Oh, it’s a solid pitch! I’ve written out the outline and everything. But as I started to write it, I keep getting so contemptuous. If I can keep it less judgmental, it might be real.

I’ve actually toyed with the idea of a self-help book for men of my age (and up) based precisely on those lines. “How to Be Irrelevant”.

Basically, it’s how you can still be useful and even important, but the first step is to just shut the fuck up and listen first.

I do find the phenomenon both true and incredibly stupid. Men did this to themselves. Join a club. Talk to old friends. Get together with people. Go to a concert. Touch fucking grass. I’m 55 and white and my social calendar is packed and joyful and fun. Many men aren’t up to the task of being men.
