A erstwhile colleague of mine - who is extremely smart, careful and honest - retracted a highish profile paper and I still remember the reaction on social media and how directly contrary it ran to the aims and goals of science. This is a very important initiative.

With all the ethical issues associated with #AI, there are lots of reasons to be wary of using it. I haven't landed on a particular side of this yet, but am accumulating evidence of how dodgy it can be even for simple asks. There was no reason whatsoever for it to make up a reading here. None.

All good until this:
I asked ChatGPT to help provide format for debate, which it did well (following the typical format) and then to provide me with some readings that could help students to develop their arguments as I wanted to have materials in class for them to prepare.
This was an interesting exercise. I wanted AI assistance to help with organizing an in-class debate for a large course that I am working to make more student-centered and less lecture-heavy. Topic = uses and abuses of evolution & human behavior.
On Epstein's "ecosystem of influence", among whose members there appears to be no "viewpoint diversity" at all:
"When ideas about inherited superiority are discussed in Harvard offices and at prestigious science festivals rather than fringe rallies, they acquire a dangerous sheen of credibility"
And obviously, anything "cross-culturally consistent" must be biological. Like kids all over the glob using walkmen...I mean iPods...I mean iPhones...I mean earbuds, obviously biological. But good that they conclude moving forward we should be less ideological and more grounded in "rigorous" work
