Flaschenpost umrundet zwei Drittel des antarktischen Kontinents - AWI On his return journey from a research expedition in the Antarctic Bellingshausen Sea, AWI geoscientist Johann Klages sent a message in a bottle for his children in February 2023. He has now received an email from Tasmania: an employee of the Central Coast Council found the message in a bottle during a weekend trip on the west coast of Tasmania in August 2025 - but the letter he sent was returned to the sender despite the correct address.

One of my favourite emails to reach me this year: My @awi.de colleague send a message in a bottle to his kids from an #Antarctic expedition and the bottle reached my home #Tasmania after only 900 days at sea travelling 15,000km!
Quick work for the mighty #SouthernOcean!

Antarctic research jeopardised by 'terminating' funding, scientists say Australia's ability to conduct strategic, in-depth, and long-term research in Antarctica is being compromised by "terminating" funding models for key programs, scientists warn.
