Illustration showing spacecraft A, probe B1 built by JAXA and probe B2, and the suite of instruments they each carry, alongside other important components. The instruments and parts are colour coded according to four categories: blue for Dust, Fields and Plasma (DFP) instrument suite, orange for Plasma instrument suite, red for other scientific instruments, and green for important components.
#CometInterceptor will be the first mission to visit a comet coming directly from the outer reaches of the Sun's realm, carrying material untouched since the dawn of the Solar System.
Part of #CosmicVision, Comet Interceptor is an ESA-led mission in collaboration with JAXA.

Apparent Angle Evolution of the Cometβs Ion Tail (C/2025 A6 (Lemmon))

The comet A6 / Lemmon in front of a rich star sky. Both tails are faintly visible, the comet's halo is slightly green.
and the resulting image stacking on these same 97 frames
My take on comet C2025 / Lemmon one week ago from southern Sweden. 97 exposures of 1min each, 280mm equivalent focal length.
Impressive for an untracked shot!!
πΈπ October promises to be spectacular for comets:
βοΈ C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) will reach magnitude 3β2 and be visible to the naked eye in dark skies.
βοΈ C/2025 R2 (SWAN) will shine in binoculars, with long ion tails in photos.
Weβll keep following them day by day on these feeds so you donβt miss the show β¨

Such an interstellar comet would be an appealing β albeit unlikely β target for our Comet Interceptor mission, which is more likely to visit a pristine comet from the distant Oort Cloud that surrounds our Solar System.
More on Comet Interceptor π www.esa.int/Science_Expl...
βοΈ #CometInterceptor will target a pristine comet entering the inner Solar System for the first time.
The mission will investigate if these comets are different from the ones we know and if they contributed to the appearance of life on Earth, among others.

The image presents a dark background dominated by a series of concentric circles representing distances in thousands of kilometers (km). These circles are subtly colored in shades of teal/blue. A bright white line cuts across these circles diagonally, representing the path or trajectory of the Lucy spacecraft. A small green dot marks the "point of closest approach" of the Lucy with asteroid Donaldjohanson. At the top right, a light gray line shows the trajectory of asteroid Donaldjohanson (DJ). At the top left, text indicates the "Encounter Mode" with a small red dot possibly showing "live updates." Further text displays the name of the asteroid (Donaldjohanson), data about the encounter, including the date and time, the distance, and the phase angle. A rectangular box in the lower right contains additional information about the observation, specifically the field of view of the L'LORRI instrument and the apparent size of the object in pixels. The box also clarifies that the object's shape and exact size are not precisely known, providing an estimated diameter of 3-5 km, citing a source ("Masiero et al. 2011").
