Art! I still do art! I’ve been so nervous about posting art recently I haven’t even bothered. I haven’t been able to download and use Glaze or Nightshade (maybe because I have a Mac) but posting used to keep me motivated so I should start again
I'm not saying I hate the trope. I really like it because I think its also a good vessel to analyze the dynamics of parenthood and parent children relationships. "The Owl House" and "We Need To Talk About Kevin" do this well. But at a certain point you are not subverting a trope but enabling one.
Mothers that enable a father's abuse are criticized as just as culpable for the abuse (the argument on whether she is or isn't is not the conversation). But fathers who take no action or actively participate are always offered the opportunity to reconcile.
A narrative that has a mother that leaves the family puts extra work into demonstrating her immaturity. A party girl that never grew out her of early years who, upon her return, is still unprepared for children to enter her life and children who do no want her to.
I often find in neglect narratives, mothers will never grow out of being bad mothers. The narrative never gives her the opportunity to reconcile with her family. A father may leave his family and not come back until they are teens but he will eventually feel bad and step up and he will be welcomed.
I feel like people think the neglectful mom and put-upon dad trope is some sort of new take on abusive family dynamics but its just an echo of the already existing trope of the nagging wife and the henpecked father that exists to absolve the father of any part he had in enabling the abuse.
You know its really disappointing that The Eternals got such a poor reception because I whenever its on I really adore it. Its a bit messy but I still love it and get so attached to the characters.
Unfortunately with Wicked releasing my Twitter timeline has been 99% Wicked related and I fear I cannot shake this addiction.
