That's what I'm saying. That would have been a much better translation than "a huge amount"

But you aren't monk

And that's a very separate problem

10.03.2026 21:01 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Which makes it okay for reading, but absolute crap for use in the liturgy

Yeah, exactly. That's the theological implication of the parable. Sin creates a debt that cannot be paid, only forgiven

10.03.2026 18:25 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

if they wanted to do a more accessible translation, they could have said the man's debt is one million pounds of gold. That's about what it is, if it's the common talent of 130 pounds.

10.03.2026 18:19 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I think that's the Lord's point. When I hear "a huge amount," I think like hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans, or credit card debt. Crippling, but feasible to pay. The point is you've been forgiven a ridiculous debt you could never hope to pay off.

10.03.2026 18:17 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Of those options, the heavy common talent seems most likely. It's where we get the saying that a man is "worth his weight in gold."

Going by that measure and the price of gold today, the debt is 109 billion dollars. That's much more expressive than "a huge amount"

And yet the NAB has the parable of the TALENTS, in Matthew and Luke. And in each of those, the conceit is that "one talent is a lot of money."

It's almost like it's purposeful that the original story renders this story more or less as "a gazillion dollars"

Every time, this gospel translation pisses me off. Why the hell would the NAB say "a huge amount" instead of the literal "ten thousand talents?"

Straight runs are hard to set up, but they're so much fun. Got even Steven early, then the runner and the bus. Started culling odd cards when I got the shortcut. Still needed x mult, and then card shark appeared.

Canio also showed up for the lulz, and a temperance or two

β€œWe are forced to stay despite the danger, when we defend our land, and we do so peacefully. None of us carries weapons. All of us carry peace and goodness and love.”

These were the words of Father Pierre al-Rahi one day before Israel killed him in Lebanon today on March 9.

Grateful for my music ladies. Funeral today they asked for boomer hymns, including "one bread, one body" at communion. They accidentally (?) interpreted that as "Lord who at thy first Eucharist"
