A screenshot of the termination notice with "This award is terminated effective the date of this award, due to unsafe antisemitic actions that suggest the institution lacks concern for the safety and wellbeing of Jewish students." highlighted
Yesterday, the NIH R35 βOutstanding Investigatorβ grant to fund scientists in my lab studying antibiotic resistance was terminated for reasons not related to the content of the science, or any actions taken by me or members of my lab

A break from my regularly scheduled political and legal posting to express some gratitude.
This week, my 18 month old daughter had to have open heart surgery. π
As you might imagine, this was utterly terrifying.

I saw firsthand the impact of stop-work-orders/terminations at USAID & now Harvard. My new @NewYorker piece is on the serious implications for the lives of millions across the world and the US β including for my own family and very possibly your own. π§΅

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Letβs hope others follow suit.

Emotional reactions to adverse events are a significant driver of burnout. Peer support (esp if trained) is effective.
Youβre not alone.

100% Iβm in.
Glad to see you including #nontechnical skills as crucial since βmajority of patient harm was caused by deviation from.. policy/procedure, clinical judgment issues, team-patient communication breakdown, lack of team coordination for the surgical safety checklist, distractions.β

Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.
More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.
I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

Trump's attacks on universities get ever darker, with the shadows reaching our shores
The US has become a hostile and authoritarian state to foreign scientists and is choosing ideology over science.
Colleagues are cancelling their US work trips. I worry that international colleagues in the US are at risk if they collaborate with us on certain topics.
I've written a new post about the increasing danger of being a foreign scientist in the US.

See this chart for one stark example: NIH funding has dramatically slowed down.
Grant awards are down *$3 billion* so far, compared to same time period last year
I asked the White House to explain.
βThis is not a researcher entitlement program,β said an official, defending their new approach.
