A Sri Lanka Blue Magpie at Sinharaja National Park.
The Wren practical work team - most of it, at least - after a hot session on Wanstead Flats managing our important area of heather. @wrenwildlife.bsky.social
Heronry Lake, Wanstead Park, at its early-spring loveliest. In a fortnight it will look very different as bud-burst brings an explosion of green. @wrenwildlife.bsky.social
A fine Dotted Border (Agriopis marginaria) moth in my Wanstead garden this morning. This is the earliest date I’ve ever seen this species.
Part of the 18-strong Wren Group practical work team which scythed, raked and prepared the ground for a wildflower meadow in Wanstead’s old sewage works this morning. @wrenwildlife.bsky.social

#otd Theatre Royal Stratford East was opened 140 years ago by actor-manager Charles Dillon. He was related to the Fredericks family whose portable theatre or "fit-up" was regularly at Wanstead Flats fairs in the early 1880s. The Flats played a key role in the pre-history of the Theatre Royal.
This has to be one of the most beautiful insects I’ve ever seen: a Yellow-striped Flutterer (Rhyothemis phyllis) from
my recent trip to the Andaman Islands. #dragonflies
Wren Group members again hard at work on Wanstead Flats, maintaining habitat for ants, Green Woodpeckers and Skylarks - to name just a few.
An Andaman Scops-Owl from my recent trip to South Andaman.
No worries!
The Wren scything team out on Wanstead Flats this morning, helping to conserve Yellow Meadow Ant hills and conserve Skylark habitat. #grasslandhabitats
A unit of floating reedbed set to be installed in Wanstead Park’s Heronry Lake. By the weekend, 80 of these will be in place. In time they’ll help boost the park’s population of aquatic invertebrates and - hopefully- its Reed Warblers.
Our Autumn Newsletter has arrived! Highlights include:
- Skylark Update
- Invertebrate Report
- Reviving the Mosaic - Article by Tanith Cooke, Epping Forest
- A Butterfly Emergency
- Things That Go Chirp in the Night - what does bird song look like
And lots more!

This Andaman Nightjar posed beautifully for us in South Andaman.
Just for starters - Wanstead Flats isn't a housing estate (but nearly has been in the past). Its the southern border of #EppingForest, a unique 12 mile-long woodland in north-east London. The Flats is a much loved open space used by east London's amazing diversity of communities. Come & see it!
