My “Vermilion Experience” was living in a dumpy house with most of the members of a ska band, and either being on campus, leaving town to work, or leaving town to go to concerts (probably with said ska band)
I don’t think the iron ranger will quite capture that, but I look forward to the attempt.

Misread “tomahawk” as “Tony Hawk” and it made a horrific story even more confusing.

A selfie of a man wearing sunglasses and a dog in front of two signs that read 311.
Both the faces show either affected disdain, or squinting from staring into the sun.
On this 311 day, we both agree that Music was our favorite album.

There was a good turnout for the SLF shirt order, and it was surprisingly satisfying to watch an overwhelming amount of supplies neatly just… get taken care of over the course of a few hours.

There’s a bit that when service members get a meal of steak and lobster, that means deployment and general fan-hitting happens immediately. So tracking that expenditure could be like the pentagon pizza tracker.
Some of those numbers are explained by scale- but $512 each for “272 orders of donuts”?

“So /constitutionally/, the constitution says that congress is the group that can declare war.
But when the president just decides to send troops abroad, there’s nothing congress can do other than fund it or not.”
That’s horrifyingly closer to a quote than a paraphrase, but my god.

Once I saw that Cathy Guisewite (of the comic strip Cathy) used to freeze M&Ms, because the calories used to heat them up would offset the calories in the candy. She eventually learned that food labeling uses kcal.
I think of that every time I eat my frozen thin mints, which is the only true way.

Great Depression grandparents saved twist ties, Gen X saved all our toys and their boxes; our kids are wildly not nostalgic for anything.
I waffled between honoring their wishes and throwing everything into a storage area.

8bitdo does a really good job of not being OEM price, but way closer to the OEM feel than the fabled third-party “little sibling” controllers of yore.
They also sell Bluetooth internals for vintage console controllers so you can use real ones with your emulators, which is fascinating.

A pallet piled high with plastic bags each containing 50 lbs of cracked corn.
Turn my back on Jimmy for one goddamn minute, and…
You know what? I don’t give a shit. This is somebody else’s problem.

So we turn our nose up at anything with a whiff of difference or freshness, meaning it stays market price, the kids can afford it,
- and it turns out they can do cool shit with it that makes adults angry and then the kids will take that aesthetic to the grave with them, and on and on and on, amen.

Which then, in the scooter world, means: “why is there no new blood in this hobby?”
Because we fetishized the shit out of this stuff when we were younger and it was cheap, but now that our earning power has increased, the same cohort has priced everybody else out of the hobby”

Does vintage mean “old”, or “it was old and cool when I was a teenager and that line is immutable and never moves even as time marches slowly on”?
I’m guilty of the second for sure.

You can get collector/classic plates for 20 year old vehicles in this state.
I have scooters with classic plates- and the plates are now older than the vehicles they were originally put on.

A pile of various colored, empty plastic shipping tape dispensers- small plastic shells that would hold a roll, and then has one edge with a serrated metal edge affixed to it.
I think we went through 9 rolls of tape?
The USPS tape separated so smoothly.
Otherwise, the 3M dispenser was far and away the best, USPS was good, and UPS dispenser was absolute trash.
I did not expect to form such strong opinions about tape and applicators today.
