People where I live have admitted to hitting flex posts on purpose to make cycle lanes accessible to cars and to discourage cycling. If they can do that without fear of consequence (neither damage to their vehicle nor social, other financial or legal consequences), flex posts aren't up to the job.

Portage Park Neighbors Can Weigh In On Proposed Bike Lanes At March 5 Meeting The Chicago Department of Transportation announced plans this month for the Portage Park Neighborhood Bike Network, which includes three new bike lanes and five neighborhood greenways.

The proposed legislation is meant to encourage municipalities to maintain its roads in a way that is safe for all users. By opposing it the City is saying that it wants to be free of that responsibility.

Last year, the City of Chicago lost its effort to expand the the areas where cyclist are "not intended" riders to the buffer between the road and the bike lane proper. It is working to reduce where it must properly maintain the road for safe traveling. legal.iml.org/file.cfm?key...
