I’m just going to keep saying how much of a problem this is.

During every movie trailer in the previews today, the couple behind me kept saying, “eew no,” and “definitely not,” for every movie. And it got me wondering if they understood that they we were all about to watch the new Sam Raimi movie and that perhaps they aren’t the target audience for this one.

Rian Johnson paints a picture of what partnership can look like when the truth seekers work together. It’s a world where we become brave versions of ourselves and see the humanity in the other.

Wake Up Dead Man makes no judgement on the path of Judd and Blanc, and it suggests that perhaps we should look further than religious ideology for our partners in this world.

Wicks and Judd embrace the same mechanism of religious community, but for very purposes and values. It’s this difference in value that creates such tension between the two.

Blanc and Judd, while not religiously aligned, both seek the truth. Both, in their own ways, desire for truth to be surfaced so that healing (for Judd) and winning (for Blanc), can occur. Both have a shared value of truth seeking, although their mechanism for getting there is quite different.

Blanc doesn’t believe in a higher power, and he believes in logic and reason, and yet Judd and Blanc grow to appreciate one another’s perspectives and it is this camaraderie and respect that leads to them solving the case. Why is this?

Where Judd sees Christianity’s non-violent expression of confession and repentance as the vehicle for change in the world, Wicks promotes a theology of scarcity, where the church must fight back against those that are taking from them.
