The image shows a sketch of Dr Katharine Collins, the co-inventor of the R21 malaria vaccine. Dr Collins is wearing a lab coat on one side and holding a falcon tube and on the other side typing on a laptop. Surrounding Katharine are icons representing her contribution in the development of the R21 vaccine.
International Women's Day 2026
Women in Malaria encourages everyone to take a moment today to celebrate and acknowledge International Women's Day (IWD). This day celebrates the achievements of women around the globe and aims to increase support for gender equality. Since its origin in 1911, IWD has helped bring awareness to gender biases in critical areas such as policy, education, pay, and representation, and has supported the development of gender-equality-focused legislation and practices worldwide. The conversations and actions inspired by this day have had (and can continue to have) a monumental impact.
In honor of IWD, we would like to recognize Dr. Katharine Collins, who was nominated for the WiM Sketches.
Dr. Collins is the co-inventor of the R21 malaria vaccine, which helps prevent malaria in children. R21 is the second malaria vaccine recommended by the World Health Organisation. This work was the focus of her PhD at Oxford University under Professor Adrian Hill. She later worked with James McCarthy at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research on transmission models of infection, and with Teun Bousema at Radboud University on controlled human malaria infection models. She has also served on the WHO malaria vaccine advisory committee and has actively been in involved with WiM for several years.
Dr. Collins currently works inon Global Health R&D at Coefficient Giving (previously Open Philanthropy) where she helps support research with the greatest potential to improve global health and save lives.

Sketch of a woman scientist looking through a microscope with various symbols to represent STEM and the following text:
On this day we celebrate the continuous efforts, resilience and achievements of women and girls in STEM.
It’s a day to remind us that there still remain significant gaps for girls and women in STEM fields and to actively think about what actions we can take to narrow these gaps.
According to global and regional trends for women in STEM 2025, women represented only 33% of the global research workforce. And many disciplines within STEM, such as engineering (18%) and computer science (20%), have much lower representation of women compared to, for example, life sciences (50%) [Women in STEM network, 2025]
In 2025, it was calculated that women in the UK got paid 83p for every pound men got paid (median hourly earning) [Women in STEM network, 2025].
Did you know that women with established careers in academia are 2x likelier to abandon their career compared to men? This decision is often the result of a toxic work environment and lack of support when challenging the status quo [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.it.2024.05.004]. There are also many examples of women entering the STEM fields, but then end up leaving due to negative experiences, biases and job rejections.
What are some of the things you can do?
-Provide a supportive environment at work and call out biases
-Form/join a committee within your organisation aimed to support and promote gender equity
-Join supportive communities (Women in STEM Network, Women in STEM, STEM Women, Women in Malaria, Herminthology, Women in Parasitology, Mothers in academia, Mama is an academic, For women in science, etc.)
-Provide mentorship or seek mentorship as a mentee
In the end we want to take the opportunity to thank our wonderful WiM community for sharing our goal of gender equity in science (and beyond) and for driving forward our mission. Let's keep creating and fighting for a fair environment!

Globalization has accelerated the spread of mosquito species that transmit human diseases. An analysis in Nature Communications shows that 45 disease-vector mosquito species have been introduced to non-native regions worldwide. go.nature.com/4hn6ogW 🧪

Just hot out of the press! Rory developed a 3D microvessel model that recapitulates physiological pericyte coverage. We found that Plasmodium falciparum egress products disrupt the barrier and halt ang-1 secretion. The activator AKB-9778 could rescue barrier disruption! Congratulations, Rory!

A *huge* problem. It also includes search committee positions, review requests, letters of recommendation, P&T reviews (so, so many of these post tenure)—it goes on and on. And the social penalties for women saying no are so dramatically higher than when men say no.

These days you will see a lot of posts from me in relation to the #GazaGenocide. I don't usually use this channel for non-scientific issues. But 1) it's unbearable, 2) it's not a political opinion, it's humanity.
I appeal to the scientific community to stand up for #Gaza
