Climate politics sounds increasingly polarised. But in Europe, support for climate isnβt driven by die-hard supporters or opponents. It tends to be shaped by a large βconditional middleβ (33%).
The @ligo.org and @egovirgo.bsky.social collaborations officially announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves #OTD in 2016.
Hard to believe we are ten (ten!) years into the gravitational wave era of astronomy and astrophysics. A remarkable tool for understanding our Universe. π§ͺ π βοΈ
Nice name! Some of us most definitely. Else not sure why about 1 billion of humans choose to live <10km from the sea. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Climate change has an impact on the oceans, which in turn affects humanity, including our economy. In this recent paper, we quantify these impacts www.nature.com/articles/s41..., led by @bbastien.bsky.social with @francescogranella.bsky.social @maxtav.bsky.social
within @sparccle.bsky.social project
Most of these damages come from non-market values: nutrition, coastal protection, and the existence value of marine ecosystems β not just market losses.
The Social Cost of Carbon for the Oceans is out today in Nature Climate Change.

Until now, ocean damages have been largely missing from SCC estimates used in climate policy.

1. In a GREAT paper (why isn't it published??), Anthoff, Dennig & @johannesemm.bsky.social show that most IAMs have a hidden goal of a uniform price and define Negishi weights to arrive at that goal. Yet, carbon price should grow at the discount rate (at least under a carbon budget constraint)...
Evaluation Summary and Metrics: "A Welfare Analysis of Policies Impacting Climate Change"
Agreed. Socioeconomically optimal values have been found at roughly 83%. And even then, political and social implications need to be anticipated and addressed.
NB: Even the 55% target has not yet been digested. We found people believe the EU will only manage 43% by 2030. More Credibility is needed.

Results: By 2050, direct COβ emissions drop ~65% in buildings & ~70% in transport (vs. current policies).
Demand-side strategies provide climate benefits!

π Want to meet the Paris Agreement goals? Reducing energy demand in buildings & transport is key!
π Our latest study quantifies how demand-side strategies complement low-carbon supply-side solutions.

To occupants of the Blue Sky, I recently arrived from X & here sharing our nontechnical 2024 State of the Climate Report. Together let's raise our voices on climate. doi.org/10.1093/bios... tagging my distinguished coauthors @michaelemann.bsky.social @rahmstorf.bsky.social @naomioreskes.bsky.social
Excited to announce a new @pnas.org publication on the Social Cost of Carbon. We integrate evidence from the literature and expert survey to provide an SCC distribution inclusive of both parametric and structural uncertainties. Our mean 2020 value is $283 per ton CO2

Goodbye X. Hello Blue Sky.
π study: Climate change and #inequality are deeply intertwined. Keeping global temperatures below 1.5Β°C can reduce long-term inequality increase by 2/3, researchers show. Well-designed policies can help stabilize climate & promote economic inclusion: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
