THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Are you purposely trying to be a troll?

I said I doubted whether *future* demand would continue if users had to pay the actual costs.

It's basic consumer economics.

Again... it's massively subsidised.

It's massively subsidised. I doubt that a significant number of its current users would pay its real costs.

Has it though? There's a whole of of forcing AI onto consumers who either don't want it or don't want it in everything.

But the main reason why it very well might go back in the bottle is there's a limit to how much consumers will pay for it once it's no longer subsidised.

If you're in central Texas & you have room to house a shelter dog in a spare room Friday - Mon/Tues, area shelters would love your help getting dogs out of outdoor kennels and into homes for a brief break. You don't have to do a lot with them, just let them decompress while we wait out the weather.

There's also a genuinely independent body that draws electorate boundaries and manages the process. So we don't get gerrymandering.

And we have preferential voting.

Those three things together mean that whoever wins our lower house tends to be elected by a majority of the population.

Technically Australia doesn't force people to vote, it requires people to show up to a voting booth.

You can choose whether to vote or not.

Also not turning up isn't heavily enforced and at most is a minor fine (if even given).

I think the only cure is full on surrender. When KPDH came out, the album was pretty much the only thing I listened to, on loop, for at least 4 weeks until the constant neeeeed to listen to it worked its way out my system.

I would absolutely love to buy a DVD set of the series. I've also just discovered it has a Cantonese dub so was planning on watching it again for that.

Watching 100 Days My Prince before it leaves Netflix at the end of the month.

It is so good - and not just for #kdrama fans. Definitely recommend making the time for it before it disappears.

Donor stem cells saved my husband's life.

It's so easy to be listed on the registry - it's just a cheek swab with a cotton bud.

I also wish there was more acknowledgement of how video platforms open you up to far more personal security risk than text based platforms. Even if you can do video and would be good on video, there can be very sensible reasons not to do video.

Doodles for Hong Kong πŸ‡πŸ‡°

In response to the tragic Tai Po fire, I'm doing charity commissions. Anyone who puts over Β£25/250HKD into "Feeding Hong Kong" or Hong Kong SPCA can request a coloured doodle of any prehistoric animal πŸ™

So damn awful that when HK and everyone connected to the city is mourning such a horrific tragedy, we're also having to defend our culture from misinformation and denigration, and very real risk that it will lead to further loss of our heritage.

Not really sure why you're doubling down on blaming bamboo despite the contrary local reports. We've had over 100 years of using bamboo as the main form of scaffolding in HK and very little history of related fires. It's a sustainable material and has important advantages and heritage.

28.11.2025 22:43 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The 1996 Garley Building fire had multiple convening factors and while bamboo was involved - it wasn't the "trigger". Even the Wikipedia article you quoted attributes it being started by hot falling metal from negligent welding and then it being ignored.

28.11.2025 22:18 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Totally. It was a quick lazy way to have an 'exotic' angle - rather than the all too common issue of lack of building standards and/or enforcement and commercial greed.

28.11.2025 20:18 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

One of bamboo's advantages is that it is flexible so it's much better suited to a city like HK that regularly gets typhoons than rigid metal. And it's much faster to construct the scaffold than metal. It's also better suited to working in narrow, dense streets too. I wish they'd report that too.

28.11.2025 20:14 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I grew up in HK and bamboo scaffolding fires weren't a thing despite every construction project using them.

You'd think one of these reporters would ask why HK hasn't had much in the way these types of fires over the past 100+ years of using bamboo. Instead they misrepresent recent fires.
