Clara Zetkin, a German socialist came up with the idea of International Women’s Day. In 1910, at the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, she proposed the creation of an annual international day to advocate for women’s rights, including suffrage, labor rights, and equality. 🧵1/4
This day in history the first International Women’s Day was observed in Russia in 1913. At that time, in Russia the women went on strike for "Bread for Peace” demanding the end to World War I, Czarism, and the shortage of food in Russia eventually leading to the Russian Revolution.
I used to hate International Women's Day until I spent the day in Tijuana where it was a riot against the patriarchy. Where race and imperialism was at its core.
