I had this thought today too, and I think that existential exhaustion is why some are so quick to adopt this stuff in ways that go against their humanity. People are so tired they want to outsource as much of their mental cognition as they can, and in the process, their bullshit detectors broke.
Experts should have seen this coming a long time ago, but maybe they just haven't seen as many documentaries about religious cults as I have.
