And unlike Gutenberg direct printing, modern method makes plates to print from.
Which is how I recall Virago first got going (the year I opened a bookshop, serendipitously) with so little Β£ - they bought old plates from out of print classics and reprinted them in those lovely green jackets.

St John the Baptist with the agnus dei, a 15th Century stone seated figure dredged from the Firth of Forth, presumably discarded or lost at the Reformation. Now in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

Hello! I know you’re really busy but could I borrow you for 1 min? This is important 🚨

We think private equity might be moving in on the NHS - attracted by making money from the huge waiting lists. And we want to investigate what’s going on and tell as many people as possible..

White phosphorus munitions.

Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using white phosphorus over residential parts of the Lebanese town of Yohmor last week. Israel's military said its policy was not to use shells containing white phosphorus "in densely populated areas, with certain exceptions"

A quick reminder that whilst Saudi Arabia can divert oil away from the Strait of Hormuz via a pipeline, you CANNOT pipe food or fertiliser.

I’m not sure the scale of all this is fully grasped yet.

With offset litho - the intervening print method between then and computer-age printing is similar, but the distinction is between oil and water. So you etch the letters into a plate with a surface coating, then run it through ink that only sticks to the etching. Same with computers, 0 or 1.

Printing with solid type on a letter press you need to take each letter bit and lay it in a bed, with metal bits for the spaces etc. and then ink applied to the raised bits is transferred to the paper you press onto it. Each page at a time. So you'd do many copies of each page each time.

Seems crazy that the whole world depends on materials that have to squeeze through the Strait of Hormuz. What if we had decentralized energy based on, I don’t know, the sun or the wind? And maybe we could find fertilizer locally, like the food waste and yard waste in our own backyards? #renewables

I've read quite a bit about, and also worked in printing, publishing, bookselling, and till the opening bit of the Gutenberg section - you're Gutenberg, and you have these 300 books, how do you distribute them - I had never thought of that issue, never mind its ramifications.

There's quite a bit in the later segments - iirc mostly staying with the whole print process topic, so more on how they produced and distributed books and how they were able to preserve their libraries - but I've only listened once myself.

#SpringArrivalSpotlights are back, and we’re kicking off with Chiffchaffs!

Flitting back from Southern Europe & North Africa through March-April, their sweet 'chiff-chaff' song is the sound of spring.

Listen for them in parks and hedgerows.

Have you heard one calling near you?

How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.

SUVs are setting new sales records each year – and so are their emissions – Analysis - IEA SUVs are setting new sales records each year – and so are their emissions - A commentary by Laura Cozzi, Apostolos Petropoulos

"SUVs weigh 200-300 kg more than an average medium-sized car, and typically take up nearly 0.3 m2 more space – emitting roughly 20% more carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions."

Do folks still remember why we consume so much oil?

Grief, anger and lack of trust expressed in community meetings on Nature Restoration Plan Plan must have clear and enforceable targets, says advisory committee

The vast majority of the Irish public feel distress, sadness, anger, grief, fear, despair, guilt, frustration, and worry at nature loss and environmental decline.

Why is this never reflected in actual government policy???

That's an excellent observation. And of course, if the author description for the image is duff, or limiting, then the AI scrape will learn it that way.
And here we get way over my pay grade - how far images or words can subvert author intention. And if they subvert the truth - or create it.

Not sure it's related, but in late 90's/early 2000's picture agency I worked with changed their system to 'hide' extended caption & keyword sets from casual viewing. You could still search on all of it, but not 'see' it. They did this because unscrupulous photogs. were copy pasting extensively 1/2
