Yellow armband with black lettering and a family of four black silhouette laying on a rainbow-colored welcome mat. Under the armband is a small notepad, a yellow notecard that matches the armband, and a cell phone turned upside down with a sticker on the back. The sticker is of a tree with a fox hugging it from behind. The text in the tree says โ€œCould use a hugโ€. The black lettering on the armband and the note card reads โ€œProtect our community. Report ICE activity! Call 408-290-1145.โ€

Yesterday was a lot. Wasnโ€™t prepared for the ski masks, unmarked white vans, and disappearing people in my community. I showed up when I got the text anyway.

The Dallas ICE office is involved in a mass removal effort targeting nearly 200 people โ€” many without removal orders โ€” scheduled to be deported to El Salvador today.

This is not just cruel โ€“ it is lawless. I refuse to stay quiet while families are being torn apart, and lives are being put at risk.

How will you be organizing your people between now and May 15th? Can we build momentum around May Day and keep carrying it forward?

Today in UFW historyโ€”April 17, 1975: Farm workers called the short-handled hoe el cortito (the short one) or El brazo del Diablo (the devilโ€™s arm) since it forced them to toil hour after hour bent over weeding or cultivating, causing crippling back and skeletal injuries. 1/2

Fascism Isnโ€™t Coming โ€” Itโ€™s Here. Now What? โ€œWe donโ€™t get to choose the people who show up for us and who save us sometimes,โ€ says Ejeris Dixon.

I talked with @ejeris.bsky.social about fascism, coalition building, and the compassion and shared knowledge we need to create safety and justice in these times. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, or access a transcript + audio here:

How do we care for our communities to get through? I love this picture book for children (and adults) to help us understand transformative justice.

โ€œIn a healthy community, we are responsible for one anotherโ€”which means if someone in our community has a problem, everyone can help find a solution.โ€

Photograph of a text from the book What It Takes to Heal by Prentis Hemphill. The text is circled in red and says โ€œOver time, I have come to understand that social transformation (the push for more just systems and policies) and personal transformation (healing our own trauma and reshaping our relationships) have to happen together. Not one or the other but both. We neglect ourselves or our growth in our rush to change what is external. When we do, we fracture, and succumb to what we are unwilling to face.โ€

Iโ€™m slowly moving over to this new platformโ€ฆThe first is from last year when I drove to Pleasanton for a fundraiser. The second is from a book I just started reading by Prentis Hemphill titled โ€œWhat it Takes to Healโ€. The last is getting me through hard days of 2025 so far. Thank you Tricia Hersey!
