Excited to share two new Public Administration Review articles now online.
Article 1 reviews 221 studies (1980β2022) on rural public organizations, finding growing attentionβbut fragmented definitions of βruralβ and limited non-U.S. coverage.

92% of adults view museums as nonpartisan sources of education, and 96% would support lawmakers who fund them. Now museums are using that trust to foster dialogue in polarized times β modeling how people might think and listen together.

Excited to see our PAR article out now and #OpenAccess!!
@colt-jensen.bsky.social and I find that political knowledge and public service motivation (PSM) are positively correlated with favorable perceptions of current merit system protections.

Excited and grateful to win NASPAA's 2025 Outstanding Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Book Award with @sowa75.bsky.social for our book, Volunteer Management: A Strategic Approach. #2025NASPAAGLOBAL
Screenshot of Table 1 from article linked to later in thread. Summary stats (means). Equity 2.982. Efficiency 2.964. Effectiveness 3.199. Representation 3.136. Nβ=β814; Response options: Not Important at all (0), Of little importance (1), Of average importance (2), Very Important (3), Absolutely Essential (4).
π§΅I was surprised to find that people rate representation as more important than equity or efficiency, when asked to assess values for public services. From my latest work with @jaclynpiatak.bsky.social @colt-jensen.bsky.social & @minjungckim.bsky.social
Thanks, Lucky!!
This builds upon my @pareview.bsky.social article with @colt-jensen.bsky.social on public value and service delivery preferences: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Perhaps understanding public value preferences can help explain, inform, and shape public support for policy design, implementation, and assessments of government.
We find:
π People with more liberal political ideology prioritize equity and representation over efficiency and effectiveness
π High PSM individuals prioritize equity over efficiency and effectiveness

@nathanfavero.com, @colt-jensen.bsky.social, @minjungckim.bsky.social, & I examine how political ideology & public service motivation influence public value preferences.
Great to collaborate with @jaredamcdonald.bsky.social ky.social⬠@profsp.bsky.social & @zmomoney.bsky.social on this!

I'm thrilled to announce I'll be joining the Department of Public and Nonprofit Studies at Georgia Southern University this fall as an Assistant Professor! I'm incredibly honored for this opportunity to work with a fantastic group of faculty and students. Looking forward to this new chapter!

I'm so happy for you and Georgia Southern!
Eight tangible things you can do: 1. call congressional representatives 2. push universities to advocate against cuts 3. activate professional associations 4. attend a protest 5. follow researchers working in these areas 6. educate your neighbors and friends 7. join a group that supports science 8. demand federally funded research be free of partisan interference
Censoring mis/disinformation research is just the beginning. All scientific research in the US is under threat. Now is the time for scientists in all fields to act. Some small steps each of us can take:
Grateful to Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA-07) for fighting to protect #nationalservice by introducing the Protect National Service Actβa bold step to prohibit federal dollars from being used to dismantle AmeriCorps' mission or core programs.

Federal government cuts threatening #foodsafety makes our @psjeditor.bsky.social article all too relevant.
@cd-maestas.bsky.social, Jacqueline Chattopadhyay, Suzanne Leland and I find the public prefers more uniform food safety regulation at the federal level.

Such sad news. I was fortunate to take an independent study with Beryl @AU_SPA and enjoyed her insights during my time there.
Beryl was an inspiration from being a true pracademic to serving as @APPAM_DC president and as the first female @jpart_journal editor.
New, from me: Trump and Musk are engaged in a broad-based downsizing of government, using that downsizing to selectively target their enemies, while expanding their political power by trading exceptions to the downsizing.
It's a new spoils systems. π§΅
donmoynihan.substack.com/p/trump-and-...
"Individual actions and collective organizing help to remind others that the actions of the Trump administration do not have broad support...Universities, philanthropies, nonprofits, and professional organizations need to remind each other of the power they have, and the principles they stand for."
For over a decade, 18F brought modern, user-centered tech to government. Now, itβs just...gone.
In a new article in @us.theconversation.com I discuss why 18F mattered, what its shutdown means, and the broader implications for government technology and digital service delivery.
