In ancient times, there were weapons too powerful for mankind to use. Those weapons were sealed in Eureka ... but now their time has come.
Doga, wizard in Final Fantasy III1
While we are powerless to stop earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural dis- asters, this is not true of nuclear disasters. If we shut down and dismantle all our nuclear power plants, we will no longer have nuclear accidents.
Kan Naoto, former Prime Minister of Japan2
This chapter examines nuclear discourse in the Final Fantasy series of role- playing games, first released by Square in 1987. While the first three games in the series feature epic battles between Light and Dark forces, later games focused on more specific narratives and the different kinds of battles that humans can experience, running the spectrum of political, religious and environmental conflicts. Chris Kohler notes how the simple binaries of good and evil in early Final Fantasy titles grew into complicated entanglements of war guilt and com- plicity, beginning with Final Fantasy IV (1991). This game introduced an element of critique, exploring political power, human responsibility and moral choices in war. Where the sequel Final Fantasy V (1992) lacked this kind of intense moral dilemma, Final Fantasy VI (1994) returned to serious issues of war responsibility, together with technological advances and a dystopian feel. These elements come together in Final Fantasy VII (1997) in a clearly developed critique of nuclear power used for both energy and weapons. Total war against civilian towns is reprised in Final Fantasy IX (2000), while Final Fantasy X (2001) depicts soldiers vaporized in a religious war, and the solemn aftermath of battle. These games that span the end of the century reflect deeply on the human abuse of technological power, including the use of various energy sources, mined minerals, and weapons of incredible force.

Here is Rachael Hutchinson in her own book, Japanese Culture Through Videogames, examining nuclear discourse in the Final Fantasy franchise.

Not to worry. Alfa System has a 28 part Q&A explaining Evangelion 2. I have translated part one which compares the game's approach to relieving yourself at a urinal. I hope this helps clear any confusion my Eva 2 posts may have caused.

'Through the Darkest of Times' review: A warning from the past "You are not responsible for what happened. But you certainly are responsible for preventing it from happening again."

in 2020 we released our game about civilian resistance during the Nazi era and an American reviewer wrote it β€œsends a warning from the past about Trump's America” - which I found a massive exaggeration at the time.

I just recently learned that episode 54 of the anime Kochikame focuses on a character becoming obsessed with playing "Dokidoki Memorial", a parody of Tokimeki Memorial. This episode aired in 1997, two years after Tokimeki blew up in the mainstream after the release of the PlayStation port in 95.

After being forcibly quarantined inside NERV HQ for who knows what reason, I achieved an actual ending to the game when the option to have a psychological epiphany seems to have randomly appeared in the middle of a relatively banal conversation.
