“please let’s not play the game where you tell me the idea sucks and why, let’s play the game where you help me make the idea work.”

I love this concept and will print this for the classroom. This is what I try to get them to achieve in feedback sessions.
When you yell about stuff the media isn’t doing, I bet you are thinking of press conferences from TV & movies where there are 60 reporters & 30 camera crews. That, now, qualifies as fantasy storytelling. “The media” now is more or less 3 underpaid or unpaid obsessive gremlins stacked in a trenchcoat
This is a pet peeve for me, but I do get the anger about “why isn’t the media doing this or that.” It has either been captured by ghouls or is gone. I am begging people to let go of the idea of news industry or media you had when you were younger. let’s all adapt pls: www.moryan.com/on-the-firin...
Art by Topsy Spray paint graffiti art of Alex Pretti, dressed as a nurse, helping a woman to her feet, only the woman is Lady Liberty - sword, scales, blindfold and all.
Yep. Yep. This one hit me pretty fucking hard.
Definitely not alone in caring!
🎶 Comin' outta my cage and I've been doin' just fine 🎶
Critics want subtlety. Traumatized kids need clarity. Stranger Things doesn't win because it's subtle. It wins because it's not afraid to say the truth out loud to the people who need to hear it most. www.kameronhurley.com/we-are-the-s...
I almost accidentally ran him over! Pulled into parking on location (slowly, thankfully) and he was dragged comically by his giant dogs right in front of my car. He waved, looked really embarrassed. Realized in that moment I was so close to being a horrible answer to trivia- who cooked Kevin Bacon?
Minor but hilarious- was almost 0 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. I got cast as an extra in a film. Pulled slowly into the parking lot for the location and out of nowhere, Kevin gets dragged in front of my car by his giant dogs. Good thing my brakes worked! He looked so apologetic.
I held the door open for Bill Paxton at a bodega once as I was trying to get a drink for my ride home.
Walked past the members of BNL a few hours before their show while walking around with my wife in Morristown.
Rilo Kiley on a CD boombox. Oh. Oh college feels both so close and so far away! Your kiddo has the right idea - and a lot of my students are waking up to that realization that physical media is empowering. Can only hope the trend continues!
There’s no pitch for genAI in the classroom that doesn’t boil down to “it’s everywhere,” or that takes education as more than job training, or, consequently, that actually argues for genAI as a tool that has a distinct function in education.
It’s not educators who have their heads in the sand here.
The abridged version is an ABOMINATION.
Write-up explaining that in Iceland, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve and you spend the rest of the night reading. Also, Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country, with most published during the Christmas season.
READ THIS: Still probably the best #ChristmasEve tradition I’ve heard. Iceland definitely does Christmas well — my Reykjavik clients had funny comments about this! Are you planning to curl up with a great new book on cities this #Christmas? Share your pick with us using hashtag #UrbanismBookClub!
I find it moving that David Lynch loved IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE so much he couldn't talk about it without crying. His sincere belief in the redemptive possibilities contained in that film and what it said about people seems to me like a key element of understanding his own work.
And to Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, and will return in Avengers: Doomsday
Creative people: streaming is not your future. Disposable, ephemeral, intangible digital media is not your future. Books, records, CDs, Blu-rays, theatrical screenings, live performance...these will be the way your art will exist in the world beyond a temporary mad scramble for views and listens.
I’m going with this gif in a hopeful way. Because man, if 2026 will be like Lion King, there’s gonna be some struggle and then some growth and a happy ending. And right now, I need to believe in that.
This is SO bad...and yet it's so hilariously bad it's caused a WP Kinsella-esque story to appear fully formed in my head.
Rob Reiner either made your favorite movie, or made somebody you know’s favorite movie. If you’re a Californian, he’s also part of the reason you or your friends can get married. He has changed more lives for the better than this asshole commenting on him ever did.
Of course! I loved following your respective discussions on The Olde Site That Shall Not Be Named. Happy to bookmark the blog and follow everything else here in bluer skies! Thanks for sharing - I'll be sure to pass along the musings to my film students!

Why’d they call it Death by Lightning when Garfield and Friends was right there
A somewhat shorter -- though not sweeter -- GIFTS FOR WRITERS this year, over at the blog.
I was thinking “all I really want is time to write and the headspace to not worry that at any random moment, the world might Get Interesting!”
Lo and behold, I think you’re on the same wavelength.
Though I may reach out to the shop and Gentle Writing Advice. Treating myself!
So many options for this question.
