This international study, just published in the journal Fish and Fisheries, presents a practical guide on how AI be applied to marine ecosystems research – from cameras on board fishing boats to models that predict ocean health – is transparent, safe, and validated.

REDUCE is working in generating scientific knowledge for sustainable fisheries management in ECAO waters, in line with those #BBNJ focus areas for fisheries like Environmental impact assessment, Area-based management tools and Capacity building.
The #BBNJ Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction has come into force. As fisheries matter, it includes key elements to be considered by all fisheries and research related stakeholders.

We´ve enjoyed an interesting presentatoin by Chelsea Gray, who has talked about the individual-based model (IBM) method tested for basking shark to simulate aggregations of the species in Irish waters and how to communicate complex model results to policy makers through the so-called “one pager”.

We have met yesterday with pelagic long line skippers from the fleet of Peniche (Portugal). We have reviewed the progress of the trials of Electronic Monitoring Systems as well as new collaborations on board for #ETPBycatch mitigation measures tests, tagging and study of the occurrence of BYC.

He presented the results of an extensive bycatch monitoring and satellite-tagging program conducted in the South Adriatic Sea, where 45 blue sharks were tracked to understand their survival and daily movements.
Last Friday we enjoyed a lovely presentation by Pierluigi Carbonara (COISPA) from the sister project Life Prometheus on the research he develops on blue shark in the South Adriatic Sea: behaviour, bycatch mitigation measures and conservation insights for the species in that sea.

We would like to give special thanks to FPOs General Managers for their open attitude and willingness to receive us in their headquarters in the beautiful Galician ports of A Guarda, Vigo, Marín and Burela.
We are already setting sails to start performing REDUCE tasks with such dinamic FPOs.
We see interesting opportunities for collaborative work between REDUCE and these FPOs around different topics like EMS, bycatch monitoring data, onboard trials,tagging, observer collaborative program, socioeconomics, fishers´ ecologic knowledge, etc for cocreation of feasible mitigation measures.
