Psych director is overjoyed.
Called me personally to thank me for purchasing Beat the Boards.
(Only sold to individuals, so we purchased for each of the fellows.)

Interesting discussion about individual subscriptions and librarianship over on X
Itβs a reasonably civil discussion about the ethics of librarianship between me and @noethematt.bsky.social

My response to a librarian who wrote into medlibs listserv about buying resources from Oncology Nursing Society for her institution when only a few nurses would actually use them.

Interesting conversation with @noethematt.bsky.social on X.
In my opinion, a defensive strategy towards technology has never worked.
Best to find a way to differentiate yourself somehow.
Maybe through buying individual subscriptions?

All internal medicine residents passed their boards this year!
Thanks to us getting individual subscriptions to mksap and uworld.

I was in this exact spot β eventually, I just started telling them to come to me if they needed a search.
It was one of the best decisions Iβve made.

I suggest medlib-l for job postings. Itβs the listserv run by MLA.
And / or metro.org job postings. Itβs my-centered, but Iβve seen ads for other places for sure.

I keep thinking of Dr. Semmelweiss, a doctor in the 1850s who discovered that doctors who didnβt wash their hands were inadvertently killing new moms.
Doctors were offended because they thought germs came from the air.

I find thereβs an unusual amount of freedom in medical library jobs because the people in the administration are not too sure what you can and canβt do.
Opportunity to be βfresh eyes,β someone who is not familiar with the topic at hand and can offer an outsidersβ point of view.

Oh, can you share with me too?
This is an image of an email I wrote into medlibs listserv, about having fruit delivered to the library for employees to take.
I wrote about another simple wellness idea for #medlibs listserv!
Interesting. Do you teach them skills so they are independent searchers? Or do they keep coming back to you for at least a bit of coaching on each search?
Are you thinking like Visualdx? Google images β if you pay attention to source, of course.
I donβt know β itβs different for different people I think. Some feel they already know how to search. Some think they can use POC tools. Many donβt have time to devote because patient care is so extensive. Just easier for them to come to me with topics.

Iβm a (kind of solo) hospital librarian and after years of a weird type of shame, I gave up on teaching people how to search & just told them to come to me with questions.
Anyone else in the same boat?

Since I originally posted this when this site was pretty quiet (for #medlibs, at least), I'm posting again. The next (free) Taubman Library Talk has been announced!
I have a job that doesnβt really have requirements. Iβve sort of made it my own. Itβs not as good as it sounds sometimes.
I sometimes wonder if everything should just be added online as soon as possible and everyone just have at it β just open it up to comments and suggestions and critique.
I like to show [ti] to limit articles that just have those terms in the title.
And also that you can find articles in Google and copy and paste and use Similar Articles and Cited By to find other articles like that.
I think bluesky is a great opportunity for #medlibs. Feels good to get in on the ground floor and thereβs real conversation going on here!
