Plato's original adaptation of Watership Down.
I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and itβs both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.
Iβve got to get myself an Adorno mug.
Fact of the day: Lithuanian bishops in 1602 recorded that people in the region gathered at churches on certain days and threw chickens at the altar.
Church authorities could not explain why.

Its always fun to find ephemeral, and sometimes scarce items by well known authors. This essay about the 1930 Lambeth Conference of Anglican bishops might seem niche but actually provides insight into The Waste Land and Eliot's political/religious framework.
Just in time for Trinity Sunday.
OPINION: Walter Brueggemann showed that prophets break the silence not to shout down the empire, but to sing out another world.

It would be hard to overstate how influential Brueggemann was on my theology and spiritual formation. Heβs the person Iβve quoted the most in my writing. His books occupy more space on my shelf than any other writer. A HUGE loss, but a life spectacularly lived.

Given the distinguished look, the suspenders, and the gentle confidenceβIβm going to say:
Groundbreaking jazz composer.
The image resembles Dave Brubeck.
So: Not a postmodern Greek theologian. Unless, of course, weβre doing theology in 5/4 time.
based on the stylish white suit, refined expression, and Mediterranean aura, I would guess:
Postmodern Greek theologian.
Christos Yannaras?
I appreciate the appeal of the βlanguage as pointing and namingβ viewβit echoes a kind of common-sense empiricism. But even that act of pointing is itself saturated with metaphor. What does it mean to βpointβ in a world of abstractions, emotions, values, or time?
As shepherd of this beloved parish, it is with a very heavy heart that I share with you the news of the death of two of our newer members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim. They were gunned down Wednesday evening outside the Capital Jewish Museum here in Washington, in what appears to be a targeted attack. They were attending a conference of the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Both were members of the Israeli embassy staff. Yaron was a researcher in the political department, while Sarah organized U.S. missions to Israel. Drawn to Christ, their spiritual journeys of faith led them to our parish, where they had been faithfully participating for several months, beautiful lights in our midst. In their hunger to know and to belong, they even attended our Newcomers Series. They were soon to be engaged. In fact, Sarah, originally from Kansas, was to accompany Yaron this Sunday to Israel to meet his family for the first time. Together we pray for them. And we lift in prayer all their loved ones. Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servants Yaron and Sarah. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, sheep of your own fold, lambs of your own flock, sinners of your own redeeming. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. With you in Christ, Dominique+

A lovely obituary written for Alasdair MacIntyre written by one of his former grad students

RIP to a real one
In college, I once went to Prof. MacIntyre's office hours... The phone rang. He took the call, listened, then said curtly to phone, 'I'm sorry, I can't help you now, I'm busy." He put down the receiver, snorted.
"That was Time Magazine. They want to know what's wrong with morality in America today."
Language never escapes metaphorical structure. Every act of naming, defining, or describing draws upon a prior metaphor, endlessly deferred. There is no bottomβonly a mysterious, generative, self-referring chain.
