No doubt, though he often refused to play for people. This guy only showed up a few times in the diary, but a pattern emerges nonetheless:

10/12/75 Dan McCall was here this evening in my bindery, and he wanted to play the fiddle, but I did not.

B doesn't seem fond of him. 😎

#JamesBarryDiary 11/3/1876 Something wintery looking and an ugly raw wind from the east blowing. There was very little of any frost. I ground one of Barley and one of wheat and one of Oats. . All the rest well. Dan McCall called here this evening to get some music - got none

Donald Gunn and I was over at John McLeod's last night and we fiddled and laughed to a considerable extent. I had to do all the fiddling. I came home about 1 o'clock. /2

#JamesBarryDiary 10/3/1876 Some little frost and snowing a little in the afternoon. Blowing some. I dried and ground one grist of Oats, and ground some Buckwheat for to get stuff for the pigs. Lots of water now, but the mill is all froze up solid. I am in middling conditions. /1

#JamesBarryDiary 9/3/1876 Still thawing and dark and gloomy but no rain. I may say that I did nothing to day - no grinding or drying - One grist of Oats came in. Fred went home. Considerable high water to-day. I am still bad with the cold in my throat.

This is a 30-year-old story, but I have friends who flew their west-of-Summerside grandparents to their wedding in Halifax. It was their first flight. Interesting, but not gobsmacking. It was also their first time in Charlottetown - *that's* gobsmacking. Here's B for a few days in Charlottetown.

#JamesBarryDiary 7/3/1876 March A dark warm thawing day, some rain betimes. A. Smith and I went to Pictou to day. I staid all night. I went to hear a concert. - "Silver Cornet band". It was a miserable affair indeed. I slept at the American house. A nice clean, cosy place and nice folks also.

#JamesBarryDiary 6/3/1876 A very mild beautiful day, sunny most of the time - melted away the snow some. Cunningham came down this morning and attended the kiln and mill all day, but there was not much to do. I was in my shop nearly all day. I am some better. but still much humbugged indeed. Amen.

One wonders how political footballers are, but you have to think that room full of Argentinians, Uruguayans, Mexicans, Venezuelans, and Brasilians (and one Canadian!) are having a WTF moment here.

In PEI, a neighbour often comes by with a van *full* of stuff. And by stuff I mean *stuff*. There's a reality TV show there.

#JamesBarryDiary 05/03/1876 Beautiful sunny day indeed. I am something better to day, but still I have the devil in my throat - great dirt and it requires great coughing to get the damned dirt out sometimes. Otherwise, I am middling well. Amen. Amen.

Naples is amazing (as your Benjamin note gets at - especially its vibrancy). But the place of Catholicism is fascinating: the crypt of chiesa di Santa Luciella (a lesson in medieval Catholicism, working-class culture, and the cult of the dead) and if you're there on Sunday, lots of processions.

Yes, and whether it's Trump, or MBC, it's up to us to demonstrate, again and again and again, that these are lies or at best disingenuous. And their ships sail on.

Our snow (mostly) melted last week, exposing a brilliant near-luminous green throughout the yard - which was soooo welcome. Then it turned cold again, and we now look like Siberia in April.

#JamesBarryDiary 4/3/1876 Clear and something cold. Water very low. I can only grind wheat 3/4 of an hour at a time, but the water rises in about 20 minutes. There is a leak in the dam behind the grist mill somewhere. I am still tremendous afflicted with the damned cold. I am almost mad with it.
