Continuing my gentle slide back into the reading world by enjoying the Rose Scott Writers Festival. The line-up is interesting, the panel moderation has been exceptionally good, and Iβm finding new authors. www.thewomensclub.com.au/rswwf-home/a... #rswwf #rswwf2025

I will never not be delighted to see these two artists side by side.
It took a while only because I was too lazy to create and manage yet another account! π But truthfully, itβs so much more chill and peaceful here.
Houses that Sugar Built: An Intimate Portrait of Philippine Ancestral Homes by Gina Consing McAdam and Siobhan Doran. Cover image shows the interior of a Spanish-era Filipino house, viewed from the first floor labding, looking down to the doorway. The interior features dark wood mouldings and ornate finishes, chandeliers and stained glass windows.
Went to Dully for afternoon tea (and a box of baklava, thanks @vaveros.bsky.social for the tip!), wandered into @gleebooks.bsky.social. I randomly read Raping Sugarland by Ian Rosales Casocot & itβs fate to find this (slightly scuffed) book in the bargain bin. sandwichspy.medium.com/raping-sugar...
No! A friend had recently got him into ACOTAR so when I said that, he was like, Yeah, thatβs fair. It was a happy ending! π
Itβs frustrating because that also degrades the user experience. Iβm on the hunt for a blogging platform run by people who I feel like I can trust to act decently, but also something I can just use to write without worrying about managing the backend too much.
Ah, I see! The bandwagon is real. π I was chatting about books in mixed (genre) company recently, and someone made a comment about not reading romance. And I was like, You know, women read books that men like all the time. Thereβs no reason why men canβt learn to enjoy books that we like, too.
Not gonna lie. Although this genre isnβt for me at this time, Iβm so pleased that this gap has been filled. I would have inhaled these books when I was bingeing fantasy novels decades ago. The lack of depth in the love stories were so frustrating!
And now we also have to consider whether some bajillionaire will throw a tantrum and make the platform unbearable to use.
Thatβs so interesting. Social media is exhausting. Maybe weβre all just very tired. π
This is so funny! π
Itβs also just so much easier to find old things in blogs. Impossible on IG. Iβm looking for a platform with the absolute simplest workflow for me.
Great point. And having to repost the link on multiple platforms is, frankly, exhausting!
And finally, what platform wonβt make me feel icky? Itβs not Meta or Google or Wordpress. Who can we trust with our words and our communities?
And itβs not to niche down. Chuck that out the window. How can we share our love of other forms of art through our shared love of romance books? And in such a way that the discussion is not shaped by an obligation to publishers, authors, booksellers or anyone else involved in producing the work.
Feels like this is the year to resurrect the blog. A recent @printrunpodcast.bsky.social podcast & @loudpoet.com post made me think about what I want from a rebooted blog. More broadly, Iβve been thinking about what it is I actually want to say about reading and reading culture.
BEN!!! π
π You make a good point! Podcast in spirit if not in actualityβ¦
Um. π«
Hello! Itβs been a while! π
Itβs my comfort film, so Iβve seen it more times than I can count, and every time Iβm surprised to see him! lol
Hello world! Thought Iβd celebrate a new year of reading by finally signing up for a social
media platform that doesnβt make me feel icky. :)
