There goes the neighbourhood...
The promise held out by AI is 'a bit shit, but much less effort'.
Is that an idea people want associated with their scholarship?

I wrote a blog post for @versobooks.bsky.social on writing a social history of analytic philosophy www.versobooks.com/blogs/news/o...
Most relevant for me is this recent discussion theotherjournal.com/2025/06/is-t...
„BURN IT WITH FIRE“ might sound dramatic, but if you listen to the stories teachers (worldwide) have to tell about how kids take everything ChatGPT says at face value without questioning any of its answers, it actually seems like a pretty reasonable demand.
Our book has now appeared, a bit ahead of schedule. Its in Open Access, meaning the chapters are all free to download either as epub or pdf from this link. I’ll put a thread together on what the individual chapters are about.

Why... why do people not think of ways to encourage interaction with other humans to talk about the great books? Why this obsession with talking to a computer pretending (with very limited success) to be an imaginary human? I just... what? What? *screams*
Love the idea of coping with Wittgenstein!
This is the kind of engagement bait I want to see
When I think about what‘s currently happening, I am sadly reminded of the fact, that Machiavelli wrote down some thoughts about how to gain control over a failed state, and and then he wrote a very thick book on how to defend a republic against such attacks.
But only one of his writings is famous…
Mythical symbolic forms of this sort can apparently be rather unproblematic to include in our science-influenced society. A fascinating attempt to reconcile two world views.

The Austrian far-right party that will apparently soon head our next government with support by the Conservatives wants to order all scientists and academics to publish in German only. I think the last international law scholar to do so was Carl Schmitt. (via @oliveras.bsky.social)
That might very well be true! Then I think though, that we‘re back to the question of what Cassirer means by „myth“ when he ascribes this extreme traditionalist/conservative element to it.
If we accept that modern myths don’t necessarily entail gods per se, but deal with, i.e., the mythological idea of a people, like nazism does, then it has to be taken very seriously. In fact, I believe Cassirer wrote a whole book on the „myth of the state“.
He‘s not more clear on the issue in the rest of the book either. Though in all fairness, it is only an essay, so I am hoping to find a more thorough explanation in his philosophy of symbolic forms.
What‘s so frustrating about Cassirers take here is that he doesn‘t make it clear at all what he means by „myth“. He only talks about the blurred line between myth and religion.
If he talks about simple magic-rituals, this makes sense. If he talks about the world of greek myths, it‘s not convincing
How could you not want to read a book called „Dragon Lords“!
This is such a fascinating topic, very interesting article!
If I just followed you, it's likely that I did so by way of @andrewconnor.bsky.social's Roman History starter pack: go.bsky.app/FRyw2gA
If you're a Roman historian like me, or if you're just into the social media takes of Roman historians, you might want to check this list out!
I think about that a lot. It‘s very reassuring to me when thinking about the future. It also highlights the fact that you don‘t need expensive equipment to do research in Philosophy, which is such a huge advantage over other fields.
Brb throwing out all my fire alarms bc I’ve never had a fire
Ok, I'll bite - mainly because the idea that accommodating the radical right on immigration is almost bound to work electorally seems to be rather popular among mainstream politicians.
Let me try to provide a basic overview of the party competition literature and, in doing so, explain why there are
The essence of man is to be found nowhere but in his works – in those fundamental activities on which all social life and all cultural life is based. To understand man we have no other way than to inquire into these activities.
