The cover of THE DEVIL IN SILVER, a novel by Victor LaValle.
A white bull's skull is flanked by red flowers in a spooky arrangement. The title is shown in silver letters. The authors name sits at the top of the book in red letters.
My novel about systematic evil & the need for regular people to team up & fight it is now available in the UK.
Sadly, some themes never go out of style.
THE DEVIL IN SILVER.
With a gorgeous cover and a wonderful introduction from the great @sgj.bsky.social

#FantasyIndiesJanuary 17 - Saturday Snippet
Prequel short story in which we see our protagonist at the height of her capability, summoned for an apparently easy mark.

I've been bogged down all week with edits and art work and am feeling the guilt of not working on the drafting project(s)...

Like this might be the point where it's no longer possible to pretend that the whole thing has just been a silly little exercise in creative writing and could be abandoned without any emotional cost.

Oh boy does getting Actual Art made by an Actual Artist for the cover of The Book suddenly make the whole thing seem terrifyingly real.

Transitions - moving pieces around, always with the risk of overdoing it and forgetting that time on the page =/= time in the story.
Easiest is fights, as long as they're the preffered kind - short, kinetic, descriptive.

It's like what they say about why D&D is a fantasy; because you travel the world with your chosen family and get 8hrs of sleep a night.

Guys it's fine for her reasoning to be understandable but the actions to be questionable no one said she was a good person

Honestly, I get more and more nervous about writing a tale wherein our embittered, damaged protagonist is compelled to resort to violence and dark magic in the face of a system that refuses to accommodate Polite Answers.

Iβd had enough of hanging around in brothels. I wasnβt saying it would do my reputation any harm; any reputation I had was pretty much in the gutter already. But the smell of old sweat, stale air, spilled drinks, and other peopleβs sex was seeping into my skin, and I felt dirty.
14 days to go.
Nik's job keeps taking him to places he'd really rather not be in The Dead Man, out in just two week's time! Have you pre-ordered yet?
