Sorry this is too long for alt-text. It is a statement about my life and inclusivity. Part of it is here. I get that I have lived a privileged life. I’m male, white, from a middle class family. I generally had a pretty solid concept of my sexuality and a safe place to explore it. I remember vividly the first time in high school that someone giddily told us about how unnatural homosexuality was. How homosexual acts would harm the human body. In the moment, I laughed. I was confused and did not know what else to do. I had some concept that these things happened. As I withdrew from the conversation and had time to think about it, I realized that this conversation violated my sense of justice. I think through literature, exposure to the arts, and most importantly the safe space of role playing I had arrived as an adult with a strong sense of justice about identity. That every human is worthy of dignity regardless of how they live, as long as their life is not hurting others. I see games as a vehicle to allow people to explore identity inside of a safe space. I see it as the same bridge that I had to a world free of judgement. A world where we can all sit down together and have a common dialog about an event. We can all participate. This sense of inclusivity permeates all of the decisions I make in my life. My gamer folks, I’m not mad at you. I do not blame you for your mistakes. I just want you to think about the impact your actions have on the world. How confusing the message can be. I challenge you to look into your hearts and try to find compassion for those around you. I’m not saying I’m perfect, for sure I have made mistakes along the way. No one is. We need to accept our mistakes and strive to improve. And the rest of us need to have the grace to help you change and possibly forgive you when we all get there.
