With today's 2035 emissions reduction target announcement, it is a good time to remind everyone that @climatecouncil.org.au has long argued that, in order for Australia to act in line with the Paris Agreement, we should be aiming for net zero by 2035. www.climatecouncil.org.au/resources/wh...

Massive Free Palestine rally in Naarm today - the front was already at Flinders Street before the union contingent had even left State Library. Proud to join and march with NTEU comrades for an end to the two-way arms trade, genocide, ethnic cleansing and occupation. โ๐ต๐ธ

Thanks Tim - it was somewhat frustrating seeing how overblown this all was, so I figured I'd offer some grounded analysis

Some particular highlights of #IPSA2025 were chairing an excellent panel on climate change and the state, hearing Professor Donatella della Porta's plenary address on academic freedom, and finding a potential publisher for a book based on my PhD thesis - stay tuned for more on that!

It was an incredible privilege to join over 3,300 peers last week at the largest ever International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress in Seoul.
Thanks to all who helped organise the conference, shared their work and came to hear about and offer feedback on my own.

I found students were really engaged in both the topic and the parliamentary procedures they adopted as part of the debate, and I hope they came away from this event with a stronger grasp of the Australian Constitution and political system as a whole.

To the frustration of some, I did not offer a straight answer, but rather, focused on key considerations students should account for when approaching this question.

It was my great pleasure to join and deliver a keynote address to students at Saint Ignatius College last week as part of a Local Parliamentary Convention on the Australian Constitution and whether it is fit for purpose or obsolete. Thank you to all involved for having me.

Environmental Defenders Office funding completely cut in Queensland
The office provides legal aid to those dealing with environmental and planning disputes and has received about $500,000 per year over the past five years from the Queensland government.
On the same day Larissa Waters - formerly a lawyer with the Environmental Defenders Office - was appointed leader of the Greens, the Crisafulli Government, after pledging pre-election that they'd continue to fund the EDO, has revealed they're cutting it. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...

Larissa Waters is the Greens' new leader. Besides having an apt surname for an ecological party leader, what do we know about her? And what might we expect from her leadership of Australia's largest minor party?

Heatwaves and climate change are Australiaโs deadliest โunnaturalโ disaster
With the mercury soaring in much of the country, extreme heat and heatwaves are fast becoming Australiaโs most urgent climate-driven health emergency, says University of Melbourne expert
Excellent piece from A/Prof Grant Blashki, noting that heatwaves are Australiaโs deadliest natural disaster โ surpassing bushfires, floods, etc. As Blashki writes, at the heart of this issue is climate justice, with vulnerable groups disproportionately impacted pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/hea...

This report was tabled with little coverage. Its a routine update on the unfolding climate catastrophe, with some important messages:
-the climate is already changing
-heatwaves & droughts are going to have huge impacts on VIC
-what we do now matters

Like many other European social democratic parties, Labour is moving right on immigration, certainly driven by the recent success of Reform. We have researched this question for years now. There is an abundance of evidence of why this isn't a good strategy. A thread summarizing some of our research

Australia charts hottest spring on record for mean temperatures โ as it happened

The health minister, Mark Butler, is holding a press conference in Adelaide to announce the endometriosis drug Visanne will be added to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. Itโs the first listing of an endo treatment in three decades.
This is a condition that impacts more than 1 million women โ one in seven women and teenage girls โ and for too long, too many women have been made to suffer in silence.
[Theyโve] been told by many healthcare professionals, it has to be said, that this is โnormalโ. That it is a normal part of period pain or many other explanations for debilitating, crippling pain.
This is all about providing cheaper medicines and cutting-edge treatment to Australian patients generally, but [particularly] in the area of endometriosis, which has attracted such inadequate support for hundreds of thousands of Australian women.
This listing is beyond time.
The major contributor to the record has been the minimum temperatures, which averaged 17.2ยบC over the spring season for the site, and were elevated by cloud cover, precipitation, and most notably, humidity.
