Yesterday was Canada’s #OvershootDay, the date when Earth’s yearly resources would be used up if everyone lived like Canadians.
Our energy use is nearly 3x the global average, and we generate some of the highest waste per person in the world.
Overshoot Day is one date; what we do next matters.
As I wrote earlier this week, and others have since, these geopolitically driven supply shocks are going to remind customers in Europe and Asia about the unpredictability of fossil fuels.

We lobbied 900+ times 2010 -2018. At one point in 2016-2017 we had conservatives provincially and federally on board and NDP not fighting it. The fact is carbon pricing with rebates is a very powerful tool to get the economy off fossil fuels and that is why the fossil fuel industry killed it.
yes we were there
As long as they don’t lie, especially if it means lying will result in people dying. There has to be a accountability for disinformation if those are the rules then yeah for sure there should always be opposition to policies.
That is rationale the Liberals give - it can become propaganda and whether it is for the greater or good or not, it can be slippery slope.
Especially, "proactive, transparent impeccble communication."
💯% agree.
Many provincial governments are pre-empting pushback for their questionable-energy policies with TV, radio, print & social media campaigns.
The feds should have predicted the pushback🫷
Tobacco, sugar, gambling, fossil fuels - all things that are bad for us - will sell c/o education.
They would have been very small cheques in the beginning if monthly.
Definitely have cheques/bank deposits clearly labelled from the get-go.
The biggest setback was a massive, relentless, and highly funded disinformation campaign.
Preempt that with proactive, transparent impeccble communication.
It is a GINORMOUS lift to empower and educate enough people to be trusted local spokespersons for one climate policy. Here at CCL Canada we have one 0.25 paid person to do the work. Focus is not something we will lose until fossil fuels go the way of the dinosaurs.
If there had been no disinfo campaign or an artificial inflation crisis precipitated by oil speculators post COVID, would education had been needed?
That is why we just clumped them all together as top 4 reasons.
n.b. QC is the only province that retained a consumer price albeit without a rebate.
This is a useful set of carbon pricing policy lessons for any government or carbon pricing advocacy group.
Particularly on public communication and the attacks from the fossil fuel industry [+ lackeys].

Denis and Donna at CCL Milton had their lobbying meeting with Kristina Tesser Derksen, MP for Milton East-Halton Hills South this week. 😀 It was a very positive meeting.😀

We're highlighting a groundbreaking class action lawsuit to hold the company accountable in court.” “A worker filed a precedent-setting lawsuit against one of the world's largest real estate corporations, alleging Cushman & Wakefield's retirement plan managers breached their duties by failing to protect workers' savings from climate-related financial risks.” Arrow icon pointing right in top right corner. Background photo of an investment graph. Red text box with “Retirement funds are deferred wages & long-term security that workers rely on. Retirement plans aren't abstract financial products; they're deferred wages, long-term security, and a reflection of how employers care for their people in uncertain times. When these critical savings are invested in underperforming fossil fuel companies and climate exposed real estate, employees shoulder risks they never knowingly agreed to.” Arrow icon pointing right in top right corner.

Gray text box with “The Kvek vs. Cushman & Wakefield class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court Western District of Washington, is the first-ever legal challenge on 401(k) managers for ignoring climate financial risk, alleging that such oversight violates their fiduciary duties. We are supportive of this lawsuit and have been working for several decades to educate and activate both public and private sector workers about risks to their pensions and retirement funds.” Arrow icon pointing right in top right corner.
Background photo of a flaring oil refinery. Red text box with “It's not just Cushman & Wakefield. Instead of safeguarding its workers' futures, companies across the United States are funneling retirement savings into risky funds packed with underperforming fossil fuel companies or high-risk businesses like real estate, that can be severely damaged by the impacts of climate change-fueled extreme weather. No matter who you are or how you vote, your retirement should be secure, and this new landmark lawsuit is arguing just that. Retirement savings should be managed to protect working people, not to bankroll polluters or enrich billionaires.” Arrow icon pointing right in top right corner.
BREAKING: One of the world’s largest real estate corporations, Cushman & Wakefield, is risking its workers’ retirement funds by investing in climate-risky funds.
We’re highlighting a groundbreaking lawsuit to hold the company accountable in court. #GreenSky

"There’s elements within that system that are playing dirty and are just trying to squeeze every last penny out of the taxpayer,” said Orlando.

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nation’s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else.
We mustn’t let this war do so.

The tragic events in Tumbler Ridge have left us all searching for answers.Yes mental health, violent videos and systemic failures all were factors.
How does the anti-trans movement—fueled by fossil fuel money—contribute to violence and harm in our communities?
