After initially being presented by rotating VJs, '120 Minutes' introduced a succession of regular hosts: Kevin Seal, Dave Kendall, Lewis Largent, Matt Pinfield, and Dave Holmes. Hundreds of popular artists also dropped by to guest host, be interviewed, and perform. It aired on MTV from 1986 to 2000.
‘120 Minutes’ premiered on MTV 40 years ago today. The program, airing from 1–3 a.m. EST on Mondays, was conceived as a showcase for new and experimental videos. It soon moved to midnight, and as its focus narrowed to alternative music, it became essential viewing for fans of cutting-edge bands.

The two men hit it off right away, and as they walked drunkenly through the deserted streets of Osaka at 4:30 in the morning, Reitzell decided to ask Shields if he might be interested in contributing to a film score, if ever he found a suitable project. ‘Sure,’ Shields replied. His only prior experience with film music had been a $5,000 payday he’d shared with J Mascis to demo a version of the Mission Impossible 2 theme song. (In another win for mainstream American culture, Limp Bizkit got the gig instead.) Reitzell knew of Shields’s recent difficulties with Island and his inability to finish new solo work in the studio, but he seemed undeterred.
