The design of one block is flipped from the middle to the corners to form the other. @stretchyourstitch told me that this is a similar design technique to log cabin quilts.

My betwixtmas project finally made up into a cushion! The not quite squares fit neatly over the square cushion pad luckily. Really really pleased with the final result.

Finally read the graph properly 🤦♀️ and discovered that the designs are not square. Am going to try if they fit a 40x40 cushion anyhow or sew a cushion pad to fit. Or turn them into a bag?
